these pavers of those who want to
remember a loved one from the 911
attacks. Details to follow.
a crime scene and immortalized
the lives of thousands, each request
was subject to strict conditions
and the Federal Court
which oversaw the distribution.
Most of the items were cut into
pieces with Eddie’s welder weighing
150 lbs. or less to meet the
limits of shipping via UPS. Others
were cut according to approved request
and often picked up by the
people who had requested them.
Eddie said that one night 27
tractor trailers showed up to ship
these pieces to Sloatsville Pennsylvania,
the location of the plane
intended to hit the Capitol but the
terrorists were overrun by passengers
who gave of their lives to
save thousands of others. Pieces
were shipped all over the world
including bases in Afghanistan
(there is a map in Building 14 by
the elevator with exact locations).
Eddie has a special connection
to each 911 anniversary
and especially the creation of
the monument. He lost several

friends including Anthony Afonte,
Cathy Mazza and George Howard
just to name a few who readily
come to mind during this
emotional time. He feels the
monument he and his his crew
had the opportunity to be part of
is a wonderful piece and commended
the Port Authority for
stepping up and creating such a
beautiful memorial at JFK.
He was chosen to speak at the
unveiling of the monument, along

Eddie Vinciguerra has
worked at JFK Airport for the past
thirty years and is set to retire in
a few months. He was selected
to head the project of overseeing
the conservation and distribution
of WTC steel and artifacts by the
Port Authority from 2003-2012.
For 9 years Eddie and his
team of Danny, Rudy, Billy, Paul
and Sal worked with SEMAC to
physically handle and trim the
structural remains along with a
company charged with the actual
care and cataloging of thousands
of pieces including entire
buses, fire trucks, cars, and
Eddie said, “ I have spent my
entire career here at JFK, It has
been 20 years since 911 and I
still get very emotional.” He plans
to retire in a few months and says
he is honored to have supervised
this important mission. His “last
hurrah”, he sighed.

Authority Maintenance Management
Improvement Program was
his contact from Port. JFK hangar
17 was chosen as the repository
for cleaning, photographing and
cataloging all the pieces. He said
that all the very large pieces were
managed by Bay Crane. The artifacts
company cleaned each
piece, categorized and made
sure the humidity and temperature
were correct to maintain integrity
of all the items. The hangar
is huge and capable of accommodating
(2) 747 aircraft and it was
filled with physical materials.
The plan was to make these
remains available to community
groups, public institutions.
Schools fire departments, municipalities
and the WTC NYC museum.

all those 1st responders, and the
heroes who selflessly helped
save the lives of others. Since

up during his short remarks, since
there has been and lot of crying
for those lost and a strong feeling
of patriotism. However he, and Di-
Mola did well in front of the hundreds
gathered for the ceremony.
His 9 years “labor of love” was evident
and well expressed.
