China covid closures
China recently recorded its
highest number of COVID cases
since the start of the outbreak in
Wuhan last year as the delta variant
starts to take hold. Many airports
have reduced or shut down
air cargo shioments within China.
531 flights, or 43 percent of the
daily total, were canceled from
Beijing and that airlines scrubbed
408 flights, a third of the daily total,
at Shanghai Pudong International
Airport, as of August
6. Two-thirds of the flights were
canceled in Xiamen. And Sunan
Shuofang International Airport,
which serves the cities of Wuxi
and Suzhou in southern Jiangsu
province, is not accepting import
cargo. Yangzhou Taizhou International
Airport in Jiangsu province,
haw been closed since July
31.

turns 75! Delta officially entered

WFS Acquisition
Paris-based cargo handler
and ground services company
Worldwide Flight Services (WFS)
announced today that it has acquired
freight forwarder handling
specialist R.A.HAND, based at
Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport
(CDG), with the goal of growing
its services for freight forwarders.
R.A.HAND works with
French and international freight
forwarders to provide cargo handling,
storage, distribution.
Cathay
Pacific Airways said its firsthalf
loss shrank by nearly a quarter,

helped by a drastic reduction
in headcount and strong air
cargo demand. But CFO Rebecca
Sharpe said Cathay is still
going through the 'toughest period
in its history'
Virgin Delta, dnata
Virgin Atlantic Cargo and
Delta Cargo have extended their
cargo handling contract with
dnata at seven UK hubs for another
five years.The extended
contract covers ground handing
and export services from the
airlines’ joint London Heathrow
hub and Manchester Airport as
well as regional cargo gateways
London Gatwick, Aberdeen, Birmingham,
Edinburgh and Newcastle.
At Heathrow, the two airlines
will continue to use dnata’s
City East facilities and will also
use the 117,000 sq ft dnata City
East Phase 2 when it opens later
this year.
Bowing to the
Queen
Just 9 Boeing 747 freighters
left to be built and delivered. 5 to
UPS and 4 to Atlas Air. The last
one is scheduled for delivery in
October 2022. A final bow.
African Swine Fever
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s
Animal and Plant Health
Inspection Service (APHIS) is issuing
a Federal Order establishing
additional requirements that
take effect immediately for dogs
imported into the United States
for resale from countries where
African swine fever (ASF) exists.
LATAM reduces
emissions
LATAM Airlines has taken
steps towards reducing its emissions
with the purchase of 28
new A320neo aircraft, as it
continues its fleet modernization
plan. The agreement is in
addition to the 42 narrow body
aircraft already agreed upon —
bringing the total to 70 — as part
of the carrier’s strategy to make
its fleet more efficient. The carrier
said that modernizing its
fleet with Airbus A320neo family
aircraft will help it to reduce
its CO2 emissions by around
50%.“The integration of aircraft
of the A320neo family implies
more efficient engines, aerodynamic
improvements and the
latest technologies,” the company
said in a statement.

A new China-based cargo
airline, Jiangsu Jingdong Cargo
Airlines, with links to e-commerce
firm JD.com has gained
preliminary approval to begin
flights. It reportedly will be
75% owned by Suqian Jindong
Zhanrui Enterprise Management,
which is controlled by
JD.com founder Richard Liu.
The carrier will utilize a fleet of
B737-800 freighters on domestic
and international services.
JD.com is to China what Amazon
is to the US. JD.com, Inc.,
also known as Jingdong and
formerly called 360buy, is a
Chinese e-commerce company
headquartered in Beijing. It is
one of the two massive B2C online
retailers in China by transaction
volume and revenue, a
member of the Fortune Global
500 and a major competitor to
Alibaba-run
New AA VP Cargo
American Airlines Cargo has
announced the induction of Sam
Mendenhall, who has been appointed
as Vice President of Operations.
Mendenhall joins the
American cargo team with 22
years of experience at the airline,
where he most recently was responsible
for all Crew Scheduling
at the American Integrated
Operations Centre.
Cargo-In-Cabin
(CIC)
At the start of the pandemic,
the Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) made an exemption
that allowed airlines like United
and American Airlines to carry
freight in the passenger cabin.
Some airlines simply strapped
cargo to the regular passenger
seats while others have ripped
out the passenger seats to increase
the cargo capacity.The
FAA has extended its exemption
until the end of 2021United
Airlines has largely phased out
lucrative cargo-only flights CIC.

Nocella has confirmed. United’s
pandemic freighter flights helped
push the airline’s cargo revenue
up by as much as 105 per cent in
the second quarter.
