BREAKTHROUGH TECHNOLOGY
ONE BROOKLYN | SUMMER 2019 23
thousands of commuters from Brooklyn
and Staten Island travel by bus and
transfer to the subway every day. The
long-awaited elevator will fi nally provide
access to wheelchair-bound commuters,
as well as parents with strollers
and seniors who struggle or are
denied entry to the R line in Bay Ridge.
Community District 10 does not have
a single Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) Standard subway station,
and we are delighted that this will be
the fi rst of two planned elevators to be
completed by 2020. Community Board
10 members will also be steadfast once
the installation is complete to request
that both the MrTA and DOT review
the street design to ensure the elevator
addition is safe for all!
BP: Why should the Narrows Botanical
Gardens be on nature lovers’
“must see” list this summer?
CB 10: Because it is a Bay Ridge community
initiative that has transformed
a once unusable public space into a visually
breathtaking oasis, rated one of the
top 15 botanical gardens in all of New
York State! There are several large exhibits,
such as the pollinating garden,
fragrant fl ower bushes planted along
the expanse of the Belt Parkway (which
muffl e the sound of cars), the only outdoor
cactus garden in New York City, a
vacant sandbox that was transformed
and repurposed into a lily pond, and
the only turtle sanctuary for native turtles
in all of New York State. Also, Narrows
Botanical Gardens hosts arts and
cultural events throughout the season,
run by a growing and dedicated all-volunteer
group that works every day to
host educational events on horticulture
and garden architecture, while teaching
respect and preservation of native
fl ora and fauna to children and adults ,
in order to preserve this jewel in Shore
Road Park.
COMMUNITY BOARD 11
Borough President: The serious
crime rate within CB 11, comprised of
Bath Beach, Bensonhurst, Gravesend,
and Mapleton, is a low of 6.0 per 1,000
residents. What’s your secret for keeping
these communities relatively safe?
CB 11: Community Board 11 has no
secret for keeping the community relatively
safe. We are proud of the work
that the men and women of the 62nd
Precinct do every day on behalf of our
community. It is not an easy task, since
we are also home to 204,829 residents —
the highest population in the borough
of Brooklyn. But despite that challenge,
it is a fact that our low crime rate is due
to the dedication and hard work of our
Police Department.
BP: Long distances hamper the elderly
population from easy access to
Coney Island, NYU Lutheran, and Maimonides
hospitals. What can be done to
fi ll this gap?
CB 11: Since the release of the
Berger Commission recommendations
to close Victory Memorial Hospital,
Community Board 11, along with our
elected offi cials, has called for 24 hour
ambulatory health care or diagnostic
facilities to be sited at this location.
The health of our residents remains at
risk as patients wait to be treated hours
and hours in over-utilized emergency
rooms. While nothing can take the place
of a full-service hospital that is now absent
from the community, health clinics,
urgent care facilities, or a patient’s
primary doctor can treat patients facing
non-life threatening health issues,
taking the strain off of hospital emergency
rooms and personnel.
DRX9000TM
RELIEVES BACK PAIN
Surgeons perform an estimated 300,000 to 400,000
back surgeries every year. Annually, neurosurgeons
perform at least 100,000 operations for lumbar disc
disease alone, and orthopedic surgeons perform a
similar number. It is estimated that between 20% and
40% of these operations are unsuccessful.
That is why doctors from all over the country
are racing to acquire and get trained to operate the
DRX9000TM, an FDA approved device that is saving
thousands of Americans suffering from chronic back
pain from going under the knife.
Dr. Melinda Keller, who treats serious back
pain without surgery explains how the DRX9000TM
works... “Over 10 years ago, NASA began to notice
an unexpected result of space travel: Astronauts that
left with back pain would come back without it. After
investigated this now phenomenon here’s what they
found: During the anti-gravity state of the mission there
were decompressive forces on the intervertebral discs
and back pain was relieved. How? When you travel
through space, the effects of gravity are removed
and you are in a weightless state. All the pressure is
taken off your spine and discs. Even better — and
this is the key — a negative pressure is created. This
negative pressure actually sucks the herniated material
back into the disc and allows it to heal. Thanks to the
DRX9000TM, disc herniation sufferers finally have a
non-surgical solution.”
The main conditions the DRX9000TM has documented
success with are back pain, sciatica, herniated
and/or bulging discs (single or multiple), degenerative
disc disease, facet syndromes and a relapse or failure
following back surgery.
Anyone wishing to learn more about this new
FDA approved solution to back pain or to set up an
appointment for a free consultation call Dr. Keller’s
office at 718 234-6212 or visit Brooklyn Spine
Center, 5911 16th Ave., Brooklyn, New York 11204.
