Hold Trump & ICE accountable
In their ongoing eff ort to allegedly
make this country “great again,”
the Trump administration commenced
a “zero tolerance” policy on
illegal immigration — one that split
families apart from sea to shining sea.
This administration has taken
off the streets thousands of undocumented
people, including a
pizza deliveryman who worked in
College Point and a Flushing father.
Both men had outstanding deportation
orders against them that went
unenforced for a decade or longer,
according to Immigration and Customs
Neither man had a violent criminal
record, but that didn’t matter to ICE.
They do not discriminate between
them, convicted criminals or children.
If you’re here illegally and they
catch you, they will take you away.
Some folks might blindly applaud
that, but they, like Trump, fail to
grasp the impact of this zero tolerance
Both local men seized by ICE had
married citizens of this country and
were issued green cards, despite
the outstanding orders. They had
children as well. They stayed out of
legal trouble and led normal lives
until ICE got them.
Meanwhile, ICE — at Trump’s direction
— separated more than 2,000
children from their parents after
illegally crossing the U.S./Mexico
border together. The kids are being
kept in facilities within cages, treated
like prisoners of crimes they did
not commit. Some parents reportedly
had their kids taken from them by
agents who falsely promised them
that they were taking their children
off to a bath, never to see them again.
The trauma being inflicted,
to parents and children
alike, is incalculable. Who will
be held accountable for this?
Clearly, the Trump administration
and their supporters could
care less about psychological
trauma inflicted upon strangers.
As they see it, the rule of law must
come fi rst, except of course when
it endangers Trump himself (see
the ongoing Mueller investigation).
Now, as this paper went to press,
Trump signed an executive order to
end the separation of parents, opting
to detain families together. He can
try to undo the policy, but he cannot
undo all the harm his administration
has already brought to the affected
immigrants, who are people.
Let us repeat that: Immigrants,
regardless of their situation, are
people. Upholding and respecting
their human rights is not a liberal
virtue; it is an American one.
We as a nation must not remain silent
on this now that Trump is changing his
tune. We must keep up our voices to ensure
that the government adopts common
sense and respectful immigration
reform and holds this administration
accountable for its actions.
We urge all of our readers to call
their local Members of Congress
and demand that they support a full
investigation into this humanitarian
crisis, and pass real immigration
reform that upholds the law without
tearing families apart.
