St. John’s just can’t catch a break
Struggling Red Storm needs big weekend against Seton Hall to make Big East tourney
The St. John’s baseball
team dropped the finale of
its three-game series with
Creighton on Mother’s Day at
TD Ameritrade Park Omaha,
falling to the Bluejays, 4-2.
With the loss, St. John’s
fell to 27-21 overall and 6-9 in
league play. The Johnnies will
now need to win at least two of
their final three conference
games to have a chance at
their 16th consecutive berth in
the Big East Tournament.
Catcher Wyatt Mascarella
launched his second home
run in as many games to score
both of the Red Storm’s runs.
He tallied four extra-base hits
on the weekend and drove in
six of the team’s eight runs.
Peter Abinanti reached
base in all four of his plate
appearances, going 2-for-2
with a pair of walks.
Creighton used a pair of
singles and an RBI fielder’s
choice to push across the
game’s first run in the home
half of the opening frame.
The Red Storm threatened
in the second and fourth
innings to no avail, loading
the bases in the second before
stranding a pair in the fourth.
In total, the Johnnies left 10
runners on base on the game.
The Blue Jays tallied two
more hits and walked twice
in the bottom of the fourth,
bringing home two runs and
giving Creighton a 3-0 lead
heading into the fifth.

4-0 heading into the seventh,
Mascarella put the Red
Storm on the board in the
ensuing frame with his second
roundtripper of the weekend
to left field. Brandon Bossard
had singled earlier in the
frame to set up Mascarella’s
second two-run shot in as
many days.
The Red Storm put a runner
on in both the eighth and ninth
innings, but could not convert
as Bobby Kametas recorded
his seventh save of the season
for Creighton.
St. John’s has three regular
season outings remaining,
as the Red Storm will host
local rival Seton Hall for
a three-game set at Jack
Kaiser Stadium beginning on
Thursday night, May 16. Two
of the Johnnies’ three contests
with the Pirates will air on
national television, as FS1 will
carry Thursday’s tilt and CBS
Sports Network will broadcast
the finale on May 18.
