Dance Party — The Flux
Factory hosts great musicians,
visual artists and other
performers each month for
a magical night of dancing in
Queens. It’s the dance party
for the ages. And all ages are
welcome. However, this month
there will be a wide variety
of ‘90s music from resident
DJs. Whether you like Nirvana
or the Spice Girls, expect a
good time, and perhaps even a
surprise or two at the event.
When: Thursday, Jan. 31, from
8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

FRIDAY, FEB. 1
Noguchi Museum — Since
1985, Queens has had the
iconic cultural institution,
the Noguchi Museum in
its borough. The museum
offers a pay-what-you-wish
admission entry every fi rst
Friday night of the month.
The museum was founded by
Isamu Noguchi, who originally
bought the space to showcase
his own work. The museum
features main, upstairs
galleries, and a garden for
visitors, vastly expanding
since it opened more than 30
years ago.

Lunar New Year Party
— Come to a night at the
museum for a Lunar New
Year Party. The Year of the
Pig Lunar New Year Party is a
tradition founded three years
ago. Organized by BUBBLE
T, New York City’s roving
dance party, this community
event will have DJs, live
performances, interactive
installations, cocktails and
snacks. The museum will have
an after-hours viewing of
“Bruce Nauman: Disappearing
Acts.”
When: Friday, Feb. 1, from 8
p.m. to 11:59 p.m.

Adults 50+ Basketball
League — There is a 3 v. 3
adult basketball recreation
club hosted by the city Parks
and Recreation Department
for the remainder of the
winter. There are fi ve regular
season games, along with
a scrimmage, a trained
scorekeeper, scoring stats
and a referee. Teams can sign
up prior to the start of the
regular season.

SATURDAY, FEB. 2
Year of the Pig Community
Art Project — In celebration
of Lunar New Year, the Queen’s
Botanical Garden is hosting
the Year of the Pig Community
Art Project. People of all ages
are welcome to participate.
Use papier-mâché and paint
to decorate the Lunar New
Year pig sculpture to make
your mark on the community.
The fi nished sculpture will
be displayed in the garden
for QBG’s Lunar New Year
celebration on Feb. 9.

Children’s Creative Writing
Class — A children’s creative
writing class is being held at
Queens Library by notable
author and New York-based
poet, Chris Antzoulis. This
free event has a comic
book writing workshop for
kids organized by Newtown
Literary Alliance, an
organization that promotes
writing in Queens. Antzoulis
will walk students through
the construction of a comic
book, in particular the script.
Children will create their own
characters and learn how to
tell visual stories through
script writing. Kids ages 8-12
are welcome.
When: Saturday, Feb. 2, from 1
p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

SUNDAY, FEB. 3
Indigo Blues: Indigo Dye
Workshop — This event allows
participants to learn how to
create an indigo vat. An indigo
vat creates a water-insoluble
dye that can be used to
change the color of fabrics.
Each participant will get to use
their newfound vat skills to
try shibori techniques on one
silk scarf and a pocket square.
They will be provided and can
be taken home.
When: Sunday, Feb. 3, from 2
p.m. to 4 p.m.

Flour Dough Sculpture
Making — Flushing Town
Hall is hosting a fl our dough
sculpture making class by
master fl ough dough artist
Xun Fe. Fe will use Chinese
fl our to create his doughy
masterpieces. He will teach
the class on the history of
the art form and will attempt
to sculpt a child’s face as
well. His technique will teach
participants to create fl owers
and animal fi gures. This class
welcomes children ages 7+.
When: Sunday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m.
and 3 p.m.

MONDAY, FEB. 4
Nikon Small World — The
Nikon Small World is
showcasing their awardwinning
images from their
annual competition. This
competition recognizes skill
for photographing under a
microscope. In its 44th year,
this shows both the winner’s
scientifi c technique and
artistic skill. This is a
worldwide competition
judged by Adam Dunnakey
from CNN, Jacob Templin
from Quartz, Dr. Joseph
Fetch from Cornell and
Dr. Tristan Ursell from the
University of Oregon. This
year The New York Hall of
Science recognized the top
three winners as Saulius
Gugis, Rogelio Moreno
and Emirati photographer
Yousef Al Habshi. These
three talented artists were
chosen out of a pool of
2,500 entries and spread
throughout 89 countries.
When: Monday, Feb. 4, from
9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
