From the storied holiday celebration of Joe and Mary Ann Mattone, Flushing Bank to the extraordinary coup of Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, each was unique in its own way. When I first met Eric Adams, then a state senator, I knew he was a man of unique talents. He ran unopposed for the position that former Borough President Marty Markowitz had brilliantly served in for 12 years but, due to term limits, had to relinquish. Eric ran for the seat unopposed and just completed his first year with the goal of “One Brooklyn.” The year ended with Eric arranging an historic event to treasure for a lifetime. Somehow he was able to bring to Brooklyn Borough Hall an exhibition of numerous 12th- and 13th- century manuscripts from St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most significant figures in the history of organized religion. This is the first time these artifacts have left Italy in 700 years. The exhibition is open to the public until Wednesday, Jan. 14, and is free. I was privileged to attend an opening event hosted by my favorite newscaster, Rosanna Scotto. She added to the power of the night as did a choir performance by the St. Anthony’s High School Schola Choir. They filled the stately rotunda with the sweet sounds of holiday songs and seemed to emphasize the message of the texts, including empathy for all creatures and a love for the poor and needy. A bonus for me, besides seeing our Top Woman of the Year, Rosanna Scotto, was that I got to meet the new president of Kingsboro Community College, Farley Herzek. He and his wife, Cheryl, have just moved to their new home in Bedford-Stuyvesant after many years of living in California. But President Herzek is coming home — he was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Canarsie. His wife is an expert photographer and sculptor working in pottery that is used in the home. I’m looking forward to seeing her work and engaging her with our newspapers. My favorite CUNY leader, Vice Chancellor Jay Hershenson, was also there and was as impressed as I was with the beautiful setting Borough Hall created in the mahogany-paneled, stunningly handsome courtroom with the historic books enclosed in glass cases around the perimeter of the room, devoid of the benches that usually filled the space. The room’s elegance seemed an appropriate setting for the unique exhibition. I encourage everyone to visit and have a view of the historic papers until Jan. 14. Each year the season’s parties begin with a holiday soiree the Mattones host at the Columbus Club in Manhattan, gorgeously decorated for the holidays. Besides the beautiful setting, there are the musical performances of the magical duo, a vocalist and pianist, as everyone sings along, bellowing out their favorite songs with the professionals. Always a night to cherish with good music and good friends.
