Kennedy Airport is finally getting a hotel. Governor Andrew Cuomo helped break ground on the project last week near the iconic but closed TWA Terminal. Most other airports across the nation have a place for passengers to stay if, say, they’re on a layover between long-distance flights or for a quick conference with business colleagues. Cuomo painted the hotel as a major sign of progress, and indeed it is. But here’s a question: What if a traveler staying at this hotel wants to make a quick trip to Manhattan to see the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center, the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, or a big sandwich at Katz’s Delicatessen? How’s that person going to get there? They can hop on the AirTrain, then transfer to a crowded subway line-- such a trip will probably take about 45 minutes to an hour each way. They can try hopping into a cab to get there, but they’ll only wind up sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway, the Belt Parkway and the other connecting roads. Getting into and out of JFK -- and LaGuardia Airport, too, since we’re talking about our beloved aerial gateways to the world -- is damn near impossible on a good day. There is no one-seat ride between the airports and most of the rest of the city except by expensive cabs stuck in traffic all the time. The hotel at JFK is progress, but we should demand something bolder. It’s time to build new infrastructure in Queens, and creating a new subway line between JFK and Manhattan would be a wonderful start. Have yourself a merry little weekend... It doesn’t happen often, but this weekend, millions of people across the world will be celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa almost simultaneously. Though many see the darkness in the world today, let us pause for a moment to see the light of our own lives and appreciate the good that each of us have. It might not be easy to find, but look carefully. It’s there. Whatever you believe, have a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukkah, a Joyous Kwanzaa, and our best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
