in Queens in 2021.
An early look at who’s running in
2021 Queens City Council races

Despite having only taken a few
breaths since the end of the last
election season, New York City is
gearing up for the citywide 2021
City Council primary elections in
June.
In Queens, more than 100 candidates
have announced their bids
for City Council seats across the
borough. With the vast majority
of council members reaching their
term limits in 2021, many of the
seats are wide open for the taking.
In addition to the June 22 primaries,
Queens will see two City
Council special elections to fi ll
vacant seats – the District 24 special
election to fi ll Rory Lancman’s
seat will take place on Feb. 2 and the
District 31 to fi ll Queens Borough
President Donovan Richards’ seat
will take place on Feb. 23.
And while elections in 2020 were
marked by COVID-19 and the
introduction of wide-scale mail-in
voting, as well as the introduction
of early voting in New York City,
2021 will see the fi rst-ever rankedchoice
voting election in the city’s
history. Under the new system, voters
will rank their top fi ve candidates
in order, instead of choosing
just one.

fi led their candidacy with the New
York City Campaign Finance Board.
