The da Vinci robot offers an advanced way of performing minimally invasive procedures with enhanced precision and increased benefits. “We want to be a leader in the robotic surgical field,” says Michael Hinck of the hospital’s Public Affairs department. According to Hinck, the robot gives surgeons the dexterity to better perform procedures that are traditionally complex when done by hand, such as gynecological and urological procedures, general surgery, and kidney, liver, and gallbladder procedures. “The tools on the robot are so precise that they can grasp onto certain things much more easily than a human hand can,” explains Hinck. In addition, surgeries done using the da Vinci robot give patients the benefits of a faster recovery, less pain, virtually no scarring, less bleeding, and a shorter hospital stay. In order to use the da Vinci during a surgical procedure, a specially trained surgeon is seated a console in the operating room where he or she can manipulate the robot’s Your Health. In order to familiarize the Queens community with the da Vinci’s capabilities, Flushing Hospital Medical Center hosted a Robotics Week where doctors could see the technology firsthand and learn more about how it works. In addition, last month, the hospital invited elected officials and select members of the community to an event where surgeons demonstrated the technology and allowed attendees to actually use the robot to complete a series of specific nonsurgical tasks, like tying a rubber band around a small object. “It was a fun, interactive, and educational way of showcasing the robot,” explains Hinck. “Allowing our guests to sit behind the console and use it in non-surgical ways helped to answer a lot of questions about the technology.” A true testament to the interest surrounding the implementation of robotic surgery at Flushing Hospital Medical Center, the event was very wellattended. Several notable elected officials were not only present, but also tried their hands at manipulating the da Vinci robot. In the coming months and years, Flushing Hospital Medical Center plans on continuing to advance and grow its robotic surgery division by training more doctors in the techniques involved and bringing on highly-trained robotic surgeons. Says Hinck, “the types of procedures it can be used for are truly limitless.” All Ages - No Appointment Necessary Vision (Certified DMV Center) and Hearing Tests, Asthma and Allergy Treatment, DOT Physicals, Flu, Meningitis, Shingles, and Yellow Fever Vaccines Lacerations, X-Ray, and Laboratory Your Health.
