“It was a massive success last year with
“Pippin” is perfect paradox at RTC
Th ere’s “Magic to Do” at the Rockaway
Th eatre Company. Th ey’ve got a bright,
beautiful version of “Pippin” in the
Post Th eatre at the Gateway National
Recreation Area. Th eir marvelous, mischievous
musical is the tongue in cheek
tale of an unfulfi lled young adult surviving
the Dark Ages.
Th e carnival of singers and dancers
boasts bright beautiful costumes (Adele
Wendt) with great hairstyles, multicolored
make-up (DePierros, Roman) and
clever sets (Tony Homsey, Cliff Hesse).
Th ey break the “fourth wall” repeatedly in
a play fi lled with plots and subplots. Th e
troupe pokes fun at modern beliefs while
simultaneously reinforcing them. Th e
acrobats, statesmen, clerics and peasants
force the question, “Is life a carnival with
all its dangers and paradoxes. Or is it the
exact reverse?
In the title role, Max Lamadrid off ers
a tantalizingly strange mixture of loneliness,
confi dence, innocence and newfound
wisdom. His song “Corner of the
Sky” emphasizes his search. A dazzling
display of dance and song is delivered
by “Th e Leading Player” (Erech Holder-
Hetmeyer). Ever-present on stage, he
sits in bizarre judgment while both reveling
and condemning peace and war. His
Manson Trio with Ashley Ann Jones and
Gabrielle Mangano is a joy to behold.
Very, very loosely borrowing from history,
King Charlemagne (well played by
Brian Sadowski) is Pippin’s pompously
patient patriarch! Meanwhile, beautiful
but cunning Queen Fastrada (Catherine
Leib) sardonically assures the audience
that she’s just a simple housewife.
Frankly, she is defi nitely not! If only her
son Lewis (Nathan Reder) could somehow
become king! Well, some wonderfully
unabashed wisdom from Pippin’s
high fl ying grandmother Berthe (Marisol
Velasqez) should keep everyone’s feet on
the ground. Or will they? Aft er all, there
are talented acrobats who fl y across the
stage with mesmerizing elegance. Bravos
to one and all, too numerous to acknowledge
individually.
Th e creative team led by Director
John J. Gilleece, Producer Susan Jasper,
Musical Director Richard Louis-Pierre,
Choreographer Gabrielle Mangano and
Stage Manager Dante Rei (with Sarah
Nowik) have created a fi nal production
that punctuates one of their best theatrical
seasons. Th e show off ers adults a glimpse
into our own vulnerabilities while assuring
us that things may just turn out ok aft er all.
