THE HOT TOPIC STORY: Queens residents marched to Trump Tower on Nov. 19 to express ‘Queens Values’ SUMMARY: Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer organized a march from Long Island City to Trump Tower in Manhattan to show that some Queens residents don’t agree with the rhetoric they have heard from President-elect Trump during his campaign. REACH: 10,049 (as of 11/21/16) Be thankful for who you are We have arrived at that glorious day of family, feasts and football — Thanksgiving Day — and with all the post-presidential election tumult, the conversation around the dinner table fi gures to be quite interesting this year. Rather than talk politics, raise your blood pressure and start a food fi ght with that uncle you see only once a year, why not focus on the good? It’s as ideal of a time as any to do so. Queens residents have much for which to be thankful. Though there are plenty of issues to go around, we live in a thriving borough. Jobs are being created and houses are rising. Neighborhoods are being revived and redeveloped, including communities that have long been ignored. It’s symbolic of the incredible demand that people have to live and work in this borough. Be thankful for this borough’s diversity. Queens is the most ethnically diverse place on Earth, and that’s a blessing. The last World’s Fair in Queens may have been more than 50 years ago, but it never really ended; it continues to this day because of the hundreds of nations represented in the people that live and work in every corner of this borough. You don’t have to travel very far to experience cultures from across the world; all you need is a MetroCard. Be thankful that you live in a place with such wonderful cultural and art institutions that bring you a better understanding of the world we all live in, such as the Queens Museum, the Museum of the Moving Image, the Louis Armstrong House Museum, the Queens County Farm Museum and the Rufus King Manor. Be thankful that they’re fi nally starting to fi x up La Guardia Airport! Sure, it’s painful getting to and from the little airport now, but all the work brings the promise that the experience of fl ying into and out of Queens will one day be much more tolerable, if not pleasant. Be thankful to the soldiers stationed at Fort Totten in Bayside, and the service they provide to our country. Be thankful for the men and women of the NYPD, the FDNY, EMS, Corrections, Sanitation Department and the other civil agencies who do their part to make our lives better every day. Most of all, be thankful for living in a place where the vast majority of its inhabitants treat each other with the respect and honor that every person deserves, regardless of their background. Be thankful you live in a place where you can pursue the life you want to live and have every opportunity possible to improve. May all of you enjoy a happy and blessed Thanksgiving!
