So true for newspapers and books. There is something special about holding a book, feeling its silky pages and shiny covers and feeling a newspaper in your hands. The Kindle doesn’t have the same power for me. My favorite vacation activity, sitting under an umbrella or on an airplane, is reading books. When I’m home, I read three newspapers a day and I rarely get to read a book, but I relish them on my getaways. Here are a few I enjoyed recently. I had met with Richard Ravitch, forstop former head of the MTA and lieutenant and private sectors, “So Much To Do.”tells the story about his many roles. a great tale he tells in his book. Thanks to a devoted journalist who wouldn’t let go until his hero, Del Bianco, was given his due recognition and respect. The book, “Carving a Niche for Himself, The Untold Story of Luigi Del Bianco,” is now available. It was written by a talented Queens (now transplanted to Albany) writer, Douglas J. Gladstone. I am an advocate myself, so I appreciate the research and passion that led Doug to write the important book. His research, writing and journalistic skills about an immigrant master carver makes the story come alive! For some reason, those in power at the National Parks Department have not given the man who “gave the faces their soul” the recognition he deserves. Perhaps Doug’s book will lead to that.
