Queens and the city mourn again For the fourth time in 11 months, the NYPD buried one of its own gunned down in the line of duty. P.O. Randolph Holder lived for a time in Far Rockaway, but resided in Mill Basin at the time of his tragic death. He came to this country from Guyana, the son and grandson of policemen there, fulfi lling a sense of duty that wasn’t just a mere calling, but a part of his genetic makeup. Offi cer Holder died responding to a call for help, searching with his fellow offi cers for a gunman who fi red shots on a Harlem block. They came across a gunman, who pulled out his weapon and fi red randomly at the offi cer, fatally striking Holder in the head. Police caught the gunman and, as it is all too often the case, the perpetrator had a lengthy rap sheet containing violent felonies that left many to wonder what the hell he was doing walking among the law-abiding. How do we prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again? The sad reality is that we can’t. No amount of criminal justice reform will ever prevent another offi cer from dying in the line of duty. It’s the nature of the job, and the nature of the very struggle between good and evil that our society faces every day. What we can do, as a city, is work together to build a stronger bond of trust between police and the community; speak up when trouble arises in the neighborhood; and make our voices heard that violence of any kind will not be tolerated by this or any generation. We also need to again work as a nation on legislation that gets more guns off the streets and out of the hands of criminals. It’s the least we can do for Offi cer Holder and all the other brave souls in blue who shed their blood to preserve our city’s safety. We got ourselves a ball club By the time this newspaper comes out, we’ll know if the Mets are either two games up, two games down or tied in their World Series matchup against the Kansas City Royals. Regardless of the outcome, this has been a wonderful time for any longtime fan of Queens’ home team that’s fi nally getting a chance to celebrate and enjoy postseason October baseball after many years of frustration and futility. It will also be a boon to local businesses including restaurants and bars hosting parties and other specials for throngs of fans. It is in honor of this Amazin’ team and its fans that we print the lyrics to the most well-known verse of the team’s offi cial song, written by Ruth Roberts and Bill Katz in 1961, and encourage all of you to sing it with pride well into next season: Meet the Mets, meet the Mets Step right up and greet the Mets Bring your kiddies, bring your wife Guaranteed to have the time of your life Because the Mets are really sockin’ that ball, Knockin’ those home runs over the wall East side, west side, everybody’s coming down To meet the M-E-T-S Mets of New York town!
