8 The Courier sun • OCTOBER 20, 2016 for breaking news visit www.qns.com Falling in love with autumn at Jamaica Harvest Festival Photos by Walter Karling There was plenty of seasonal fun for the whole family at the Jamaica Harvest Festival held along Jamaica Avenue near 160th Street on Saturday, Oct. 15. Sponsored by the Jamaica Center Business Improvement District, the afternoon of activities included music, dancing, magic, arts and crafts for the kids and even a pie bake-off. At street level, the Approaching Storm Marching Band drum major Deirdre Josephs (aka “Miss Shut-em Down”) seconds the enthusiasm. They were close, but no cigar. Guessing the weight of that gourd: Mandingo Onyango and Kaeisha O’Neal (Answer: 142 pounds) The Federation of Black Cowboys (and their trusty steeds): Joshua Huff, R.W. “Curley” Hall and Daequon Watson. Thomas Crater and his sister Edna Mae craning their necks to view stiltwalker Ali Luminescent. Madeleine The Magician showed nothing up her sleeves nor in the bag. A lively zumba dance demonstration entertained the festival folk. Kids diligently at work decorating their free pumpkins. Face-decorated Elvis Blackwell with his balloon and pumpkins.
