SENTENCING FOR SUSPECTS IN DEADLY WOODHAVEN BEATING The last two individuals of a group of six teenagers who violently beat and stomped an 18-yearold male to death on a Woodhaven street five years ago are now serving prison sentences. Both individuals pleaded guilty to first-degree gang assault. Jonathan Echevarria, 21, of Brooklyn and Nolis Ogando, 23, of Ridgewood previously pleaded guilty to first-degree gang assault for the attack that took the life of 18-year-old Anthony Collao of Long Island back in March 2011. Echevarria was sentenced to 18 years and Nolis Ogando, 23, Queens was given 8 years in prison. Their sentencing also includes 5 years’ post release supervision. “Hopefully, the sentencing of these last two defendants will bring some measure of comfort to the family of the man killed and send a message that bigotry in any form is not tolerated in Queens County,” said Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. The attack occurred in March 2011 as the victim left a birthday party that was hosted by two openly gay men in Woodhaven. The defendants made derogatory remarks, including anti-gay slurs, to Collao and his friend after leaving the party. Collao was chased down at approximately 12:50 a.m. on 90th Street between 88th and 89th Avenues, he was thrown to the ground and brutally beaten with a objects and piece of lattice fencing. The defendants took the victim’s Atlanta Braves baseball cap and sneakers and left him injured on the ground. Police apprehended five of the defendants 15 minutes after the attack in the vicinity of Woodhaven Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue. The officers recovered a metal pipe with blood on it near the victim along with a piece of fencing. Collao died two days later as a result of the injuries he sustained during the attack. Calvin Pietri, 22, and Luis Tabales, 22, pleaded guilty in May 2013 to first-degree gang assault and was sentenced to 12-16 years in prison.
