She is trying to break into the New York City cake scene by raising money to open a cupcake and pastry shop in Bellerose. She hopes to raise $8,000 in Kickstarter donations by October, when she plans on opening her business, which she calls Cake Music NY. “Places like Brooklyn and Manhattan are already overcrowded with these kinds of things, but Queens is a perfect spot to make my dream a reality,” White, 41, said. She said she hopes to find a storefront on Hillside Avenue or Jamaica Avenue. “Jamaica Avenue is my number one choice because of the high demand for baked goods in the area,” she said. White has been making cupcakes for the last eight years but she’s never owned a commercial ALL ARE WELCOME On Saturday, October 18th, St. Francis Preparatory School will host its annual Open House from noon to 4:30PM. The day will feature presentations by our administration and admissions office, as well as give Prep the opportunity to unveil its brand new, state-of-the-art Science labs. These labs represent the next step in Prep’s continued improvements that started with a complete upgrade in the school’s infrastructure, a new Physical Education/Fitness center, expanded student cafeteria space, and a new Visual Arts Education wing. Prep’s Music Department will also be on full display, with performances by our Jazz Band, Chamber Choir, and Chamber Orchestra, all recently returned from a concert tour in London (our fourth international tour in ten years). In addition to individualized presentations by all our academic departments (eleven in total), all our clubs and activities will be represented. These clubs run the gamut from ethnic to academic to faith-based to hobbies. There is something for everyone at Prep, and if we don’t have it, we’ll start it! And if that weren’t enough, visitors to the Prep will be exposed to our extensive and storied athletic program, featuring nearly 60 teams and sports-related activities. Each and every administrator, faculty member, members of our Parents’ Guild, our 1:1 iPad Program Director, and upwards of 200 students will be on hand to offer presentations and tours, and answer all your questions. There will also be staff members on hand to specifically discuss more seminal concerns, such as academic requirements and tuition assistance. The day promises to be a great one, and is a one that we at Prep always look forward to in terms of sharing all our community has to offer with you. She said she is also planning to take out a loan for about $80,000, hoping to turn her dream into a family business. “I want to leave something to my daughter,” she said. “And this is my chance to do it.” As for the business name, White said simply, “Everyone likes music.” “It doesn’t actually have anything to do with music directly,” she said, “but there’s an appeal.” Photos courtesy of Dawn White Dawn White hopes that her Kickstarter campaign will help her open a cupcake business in Queens.
