Memorial Chapel Mausoleum

crypt entombment as means of interment and memorialization.
It is with great pride and pleasure that
the Board of Trustees of Flushing Cemetery
Association announces
the opening of its newly constructed
Memorial Chapel Mausoleum.
The 75 acre countryside cemetery,
lovingly referred to as the
Wonderland of a Million Blooms,
has provided a beautiful resting place
for those who have passed on since 1853.
In addition to its nearly 3400 niches,
the Memorial Chapel Mausoleum
will provide Flushing Cemetery the ability,
for the fi rst time in its 165 year history,
to off er families the option of crypt
entombment in a community mausoleum.
General Manager John Helly stated,
“With cremation rates in New York expected to be
over 50% by the year 2022 and with many cemeteries
facing the reality of dwindling land acreage,
our new mausoleum, with its options of niches and
crypts, will allow Flushing Cemetery to serve the needs
of our community for decades to come”.

Summer lives on at The Courtyard

With cooler fall days ahead, you probably
want to soak up the last warm rays
with a fruity drink in hand. Now, there’s
space specifi cally curated for enjoying
the sunny months in western Queens.
With ample and cozy seating, lawn games,
string lights and live music, the hangout is
perfectly named Th e Courtyard.
Th e new outdoor pop-up opened its
doors this August in the backyard of the
historic Paper Factory Hotel, which has
been around since 1925, fi rst as the original
Pilot Radio Company. Around 1965,
a new owner took over and made it into a
paper factory, hence the name. Now, it’s a
trendy and industrial hideout overlooking
the skyline and the majority of LIC
and Astoria.
Th e Courtyard is just the fi rst off ering
at the Paper Factory location by Th e
Collective, a global network of co-living
spaces made to host cultural programming
and bring people together.
Th e Collective has been building co-living
spaces across London since 2010,
and now, it’s transforming the 125-room
Paper Factory into its fi rst U.S. location
— right here in Long Island City. It has
plans to relaunch the space this month as
Th e Collective Paper Factory, a short-stay
co-living space.
Th e Courtyard, with its modern, getaway
vibe, was the perfect way to make
use of the outdoor space in the meantime:
“We wanted to take advantage of the summer
months and activate a space for locals
and visitors while the rest of our space is
still in transition,” said Reza Merchant,
CEO and founder of Th e Collective.
Th e Courtyard will be open throughout
September and into October, and as it’s an
outdoor space, each day is weather-permitting.
No closing date for the pop-up
has been announced yet.
“We wanted Th e Courtyard to be a
space that balances intrigue with respite
— that encourages casual conversation,
relaxation and an excellent drink without
fuss. We hope we can become a late
aft ernoon and evening stomping grounds
at the center of Astoria and Long Island
City’s kaleidoscopic cultural off erings,”

Merchant said.
Th e Collective has a strong interest in
keeping the new hotspot local and giving
back to the community in which it
thrives. Since its opening on Aug. 1, Th e
Courtyard organized for a food truck by
Souvlaki GR, a Greek restaurant on the
Lower East Side, to be stationed right in
front of the outdoor oasis every Th ursday
through Sunday. Th e restaurant and
truck are owned by Astoria natives Abby
Sierros, Pavlos Sierros and Kostas Plagos.
Aside from having tasty Greek food
like lamb pitas and chicken gyros on the
premises, Th e Courtyard off ers a happy
hour during the week from 4 to 7 p.m.
You can get signature cocktails and wine
for just $8, Pacifi cos for $5 and a bucket
of Montauk beer for $25.
“Personally, I really like the traditional
lamb pita with super fl avorful, tender
meat served on a fl uff y, fresh pita. Th e
cocktail PF Spritz is refreshing and perfect
for cooling down on hot summer
days,” Merchant said.
No matter what your liquor or fl avor
preferences are, you will be sure to
fi nd something you can sip on all night.
Th e crowd favorite seems to be the PF
Spritz containing strawberry Aperol,
Pama pomegranate liqueur and sparkling
wine. However, the frosty Frosé practically
tastes and looks like summer in a glass.
Th ere is also the Summer Negroni, a mix
of campari, sweet vermouth and sparkling
wine.
Every Saturday starting at 7 p.m., local
musicians play on the patio as part of
Th e Courtyard’s Summer Saturdays series.
One week they had bass player and ethnomusicologist,
Noah Garabedian, make the
guests swoon with his jazz tunes.
“We hope to make Th e Courtyard a
mainstay of our summer program for
years to come — though, as with everything
we do, it is bound to evolve with
the community we build here,” Merchant
said.
