These phrases and words are just a sampling of the business lexicon that are second nature to CUNY’s community college students as they compete in the Capital One CUNYwide Entrepreneurship Challenge, beginning on October 17, 2014. The program will be led by Professor Christine Mooney, an associate professor in the Business department at Queensborough Community College and the principal investigator of the grant. The grant is in partnership with Dr. Stuart Schulman of Baruch College and led by Dr. John Clark, CUNY Center for Student Entrepreneurship. “We are thrilled to be working with Capital One on this exciting pilot initiative. As mentors, our goal is to encourage our student entrepreneurs to think boldly and share their ideas with others,” said Professor Christine Mooney. Professor Mooney added that the combination of New York City’s amazing diversity, ripe network of local businesses and development programs for community college students creates an ideal environment for the initiative. The competition begins in October with students practicing their pitch ideas to faculty and fellow students. In November, students will participate in workshops with volunteer business executives from the New York City area who will offer advice and feedback to the contestants. In January, students will then enter the Entrepreneurship Business Bowl where they will have an opportunity to formally pitch their business plan. Participants will compete in subjects including accounting, business law and computer information systems. Students may present their plans individually or as part of a team. “As a local bank, we are committed to investing in New York and helping our community to grow and thrive,” said Theresa Bedeau, vice president of community development banking at Capital One Bank. “By fostering entrepreneurship and enabling CUNY students to gain real world business experience, we are working to develop the future business leaders of our city.” Semi-finalists compete at the end of April. Those serious about establishing small businesses are eligible for start-up funds and one-on-one mentorship.
