12 The Courier SUN • SEPTEMBER 24, 2015 FOR Breaking news visit www.couriersun.com police beat Compiled by Angela Matua and Robert Pozarycki Queens residents indicted in Brooklyn for heroin trafficking Two Middle Village residents and a Jamaica man were among 25 individuals arrested last week for their alleged roles in a large-scale heroin sale and distribution ring based in Brooklyn, prosecutors announced. Police uncovered the ring through an investigation that began in January. Detectives identified Williamsburg resident Josie Tavera, 25, as the leader, and he allegedly employed several relatives in selling and distributing heroin across the five boroughs. According to authorities, Middle Village’s Christian Rodriguez, 24, helped supply Tavera with heroin, while Tavera’s siblings — Jose and Sheila Tavera, 26 and 29 respectively, of Jamaica — supplied and/or packaged the narcotics for sale. Another Middle Village resident, Jose Sosa, 25, was also identified as a heroin supplier. All of the suspects were variously charged in a 368-count indictment with conspiracy, sale and possession of a controlled substance and money laundering. Each suspect faces up to 25 years behind bars if convicted. “There’s a growing heroin epidemic in New York and other parts of the country that’s taking the lives of many of our young people hooked on this deadly and highly addictive drug,” Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement. “We must deal with this quiet drug plague by going after those who peddle this poison in our communities.” Ridgewood couple charged for downloading, watching child porn videos: DA Detectives charged a husband and wife from Ridgewood on Sept. 17 with downloading videos of children involved in sexual activity which they allegedly watched together on their television, prosecutors said. George Slavescu, 49, and Ioana Pricope- Slavescu, 35, were booked on multiple counts of promoting and possessing a sexual performance by a child. They face between four and seven years behind bars if convicted. Through an investigation that the NYPD Vice Major Case Team conducted, police linked an IP (Internet protocol) address belonging to George Slavescu to a peer-topeer network in which images and videos of child pornography were known to be shared, according to authorities. Detectives determined that, on Aug. 8, Slavescu downloaded a video depicting a girl between 8 and 11 years of age performing an oral sexual act on a male. In monitoring the network the following day, prosecutors noted, they found a list of files that Slavescu shared and downloaded showing young girls, some believed to be less than 12 years old, involved in sexual acts with adults. Police downloaded from Slavescu’s online account two additional Fall Gala Northeast Queens Quee ns Chapter of the Long Island Board of Realtors Invites You To Our Fundraiser to Benefit Friends of Karen provides vital, practical and comprehensive support - at no cost - to families living in the New York tri-state region who are caring for a child with cancer or another life threatening illness 555 Northern Blvd, Great Neck NY Wednesday, October 14, 2015 - 6pm-10pm Cocktails, Dinner, Dancing & Open Bar $85 per guest reserve a table of 10 for $800 Ticket Sales & Information Contact: Rosalie Labbate 0017.435.3483 or Gerri Moran 646.369.9013 102nd Precinct Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, Ozone Park Two suspects in Woodhaven wanted for lotery scam on 80-year-old woman Photos courtesy of NYPD Detectives are looking for two suspects in Woodhaven who tricked an 80-year-old woman into giving them $90,000 in cash earlier this month. On Wednesday, Sept. 9, two suspects approached the victim at 80-35 Jamaica Ave. after exiting a Jeep Cherokee Latitude at about 2:30 p.m. The first suspect, described by police as a Hispanic woman in her early 40s, asked the victim if she could help her cash a winning lottery ticket. The second suspect, a Hispanic male wearing a pink shirt and blue jeans, explained to the victim what she had to do to cash the winning lottery ticket, police said. The suspects convinced the victim to withdraw and provide them $90,000. After the victim gave them the money, the suspects drove the woman to her house and asked her to provide a utility bill to prove that was her residence. When the victim came out of her house to produce the bill, both suspects fled the scene. The incident was later reported to the 102nd Precinct. Police executed a court-authorized search of the Slavescus’ 67th Street home on Thursday and seized a computer tower found to contain hundreds of videos and photos of children involved in sexual acts. During questioning, according to the criminal complaint, George Slavescu allegedly admitted to downloading more than a thousand files of child pornography and admitted to pleasuring himself while viewing them. Ioana Pricope-Slavescu also allegedly told detectives that she joined her husband in watching child porn on their television, which was hooked up to the computer. “The Internet has replaced the proverbial back alley as the place where purveyors of child pornography gather to share their vile and disturbing videos and photographs of young children being sexually abused,” Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said in a statement. “Perhaps what is most shocking, as alleged in this case, is that the husband and wife defendants could consider viewing such disturbing imagery as family entertainment.”
