Janet Koch (standing, third from left), executive director of Life’s WORC, and state Senator Joe Addabbo (next to her) visited the group’s home in Ozone Park. I got to see the number one men’s player Novak Djokovic at the U.S. Open, and the next day attend the Hampton Classic horse show in Bridgehampton, have time with my grandchildren and attend my friends’ holiday party in Westhampton Beach. I also got to visit one of Life’s WORC’s powerful group homes in Ozone Park with CEO Janet Koch and state Senator Joe Addabo. A breathtaking week! As an early supporter of the building of the worldclass U.S. Open complex in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, I have been invited to their President’s Suite to watch the matches. What great views of the action on the court and off. The beautifully landscaped facilities were expanded this year to feature the movable roof over the main Arthur Ashe Stadium, and going to the Suite is an experience that includes a sumptuous buffet meal and the chance to meet new people seated at my table. This year, there were two young men from Palo Alto, California, one an entrepreneur and the other a venture capitalist who invests in tech companies. I was amazed that one of his investments was in my favorite app Waze, the navigating tool that I use every day. I can’t imagine driving anywhere without its help! What a bull’s-eye investment! The other young man has created a Facebook for young people. Juan Jaysingh is the founder and CEO of ZeeMee, which its website describes as “Pretty much the best way ever to bring your college application to life and connect with students before reaching campus.” According to its website, “ZeeMee is a free service that gives you the ability through images and video to showcase yourself for college admissions, scholarship opportunities, and employment by creating a unique profile page. In addition, ZeeMee connects you with others accepted to the same school in an exclusive community, where you can connect on your passions and interests.” The Hampton Classic is an event I always wanted to attend because I love the beauty and majesty of horses, and I am in awe of their skills with a talented rider on their back. I saw the massive animals jump over hurdles and look like they were flying through the air. I was invited by BNB (Bridgehampton National Bank), that recently expanded into Queens on Bell Boulevard, to “The Chalet” at the Classic. I got to watch the horses perform and have a delicious lunch, with the bonus of networking with many of the clients of the bank. To my delight, I got to meet the CEO and president of the bank, Kevin O’Connor. Since he has just acquired new branches by buying Community National Bank, I invited and he accepted my offer to visit the Queens Museum and see the Panorama that offers a view of every building in New York City. The remarkable football field-sized space is viewed from a glass floor balcony surrounding the city, and in a 15-minute walk you can see every neighborhood and even the planes landing and taking off from the two airports in Queens. If you haven’t seen the Panorama, you are missing am extraordinary opportunity to see the city! Then, a few days later, my friends Vinny Riso and Georgiana Reese had a party at their beach house in Westhampton Beach. All the guests decided that they were blessed to have the threatening storm pass and instead have a picture-perfect day for their party. There’s something that warms the heart about sharing great food and drinks and catching up with friends. The hot topic of the day that caused passionate discussions was the Trump/ Clinton race. Whatever their choices, it’s the first presidential race I can remember that has made so many people talk politics – I think it’s powerful and positive for our country and should result in everyone getting out on Election Day to vote!
