What choices are there? Concerns about cremation often come about through misunderstanding and misinformation. When the death of a loved one occurs, a family needs and looks for the time and opportunity to gather and to experience the support of other family members, their faith, friends, and community and to celebrate the life of someone loved. Unfortunately, some believe that cremation somehow eliminates all these healthy, supportive and healing opportunities. In truth, cremation is simply one of the nal physical steps just as a burial is. The same opportunities to gather and experience faith and community can certainly take place regardless of other nal decisions that are made. We offer a broad range of cremation oriented services including many that are very traditional and include a Mass of Christian Burial followed by burial of the cremated remains in a Catholic Cemetery; others with a Memorial Service rather than visitation period; and other options that are tailored to meet the speci c needs of a particular family. Cremation need not deprive us of the important spiritual and communal opportunities that our faith and traditions offer and so we try to have support and meaning be a part of each service we are privileged to conduct. Our world is so busy and our lives so involved that what was just 12 years ago seem of little importance. To those who lost a loved one every day has moments of sorrow that never go away. Thousands responded to Ground Zero in the aftermath of the attacks. At first the efforts were to save anyone buried beneath the rubble that the day before were Towers. Ultimately the effort was one to clean up the site and to find body parts of the nearly 3,000 Americans lost to the terrorists. Of those who worked on the “pile” many have died from the contaminants that proliferated the site. Congress belatedly acted to offer the financial aid to the volunteers who were also victims of al-Qaeda. Daily those who worked upon the pile die, leaving behind families who are forced to pay the price of the attacks. Many have children who face an uncertain future. Don’t we owe an obligation to the First Responders who saved thousands sacrificing their lives? Are there any less obligations due recognizing those who worked on the “pile” and have died doing the cleanup that we demanded as citizens? St. Michael’s on September 7th will host the Second Remember Me Run to raise funds for the children of those who died as a consequence of working on the “pile” to attend higher education. Following the Run a Memorial Service honoring the First Responders will be held led by religious and community leaders. By respecting those who paid the ultimate price we honor their devotion and fulfill our duty as grateful citizens.
