According to the New York Council on Public Gambling, in New York state 48% of seventh to 12th graders reported that they had gambled within the past year, 10% have had problems due to their gambling and an additional 10% are at risk for problem gambling. So what can parents of young children do now? They can be a good role model. Look for opportunities to talk to your children. Children need to know that gambling is not a way to make money and the majority of gamblers will lose. Our children are exposed to gambling messages at a very young age from lottery tickets at the grocery store to internet and television that portray gambling as exciting and easy money.
