Some of the week’s highlights include No. 13 Sara Errani defeating Venus Williams in the third round of women’s singles on Aug. 29, and No. 10 Caroline Wozniacki upsetting No. 5 Maria Sharapova in the fourth round on Aug. 31, in a 2-hour, 37-minute match. The men’s singles side also featured a marathon match between two of the world’s top young players. No. 10 Kei Nishikori of Japan defeated No. 5 seed Milos Raonic of Canada in a 4-hour, 19-minute match that ended at 2:26 a.m. on Sept. 2. But probably the most exciting news of the first week was the story of 15-year-old Catherine “CiCi” Bellis of California. In her first Grand Slam match ever, Bellis defeated No. 12 seed Dominika Cibulkova, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. But then with a patriotic crowd of about 2,500 fans behind her on Court 17 on Aug. 28, Bellis came just short of pulling another upset in her second match against world No. 48 Zarina Diyas.
