The accident happened at about 4:50 a.m. on Aug. 30 near Tuckerton Street. After he was struck by the car, the victim, who, as of press time had yet to be identifi ed by police, was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced dead, cops said. The driver remained on the scene and the investigation continues. 104TH PRECINCT Ridgewood, Glendale, Middle Village and Maspeth Suspects sought in laundromat holdup Photo courtesy of NYPD Three men robbed a laundromat at gunpoint, forcing the employees into a bathroom before running off with the cash, cops said. The holdup took place at the Rego Park Megawash, located at 62-82 Woodhaven Blvd., around 4 a.m. on Aug. 8, according to police. After entering the business and announcing a robbery, the suspects, two of them armed with a gun, ordered the laundromat’s two employees into the bathroom, offi cials said. The suspects then fl ed with money they took from the register. No one was injured. Offi cers discovered 24-year-old Julian Smith lying on the ground in the center lane of the Belt Parkway near the Van Wyck Expressway at about 3:50 a.m. on Aug. 27, according to police. He was found unconscious and unresponsive next to his bike, and was pronounced dead at the scene, offi cials said. Cops investigating death of Queens toddler Police are investigating the death of a 14-month-old Springfi eld Gardens girl after her father picked the child up from day care and found her unresponsive when he arrived home. Offi cers were called to the 228th Street residence of the toddler, Daniella Okoye, at about 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 29 and discovered her unconscious, cops said. She was taken to Franklin General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Daniella’s father told authorities that when he picked his daughter up from day care she was already in her car seat and she appeared to be asleep, a police source said. When he arrived home and she wasn’t responsive, he immediately called 9-1-1. Marshals surrounded the house at 144th Drive and 175th Street at about 11 p.m. on Aug. 26 and broke down the door with a battering ram, reports said. The suspect was wearing a bulletproof vest and was the fi rst to open fi re. The marshals returned fi re and the suspect was wounded in his left hand. Witnesses told the New York Daily News that after being injured, the suspect threw his gun outside his apartment and surrendered to the marshals. The suspect, Oswald Lewis, was wanted by the DEA for cocaine smuggling and by the NYPD for a stabbing in Brooklyn, according to published reports, and had been on the run for more than two decades. The shootout terrifi ed the residents in the neighboring houses, with one witness telling the New York Post that it was like a movie. “It was so surreal,” she said. Airline employee assaulted at LaGuardia Airport: police A 22-year-old man was arrested for assaulting an airline employee at LaGuardia Airport after getting into a confrontation at baggage claim, offi cials said. Antonio V. Sappleton, a resident of Yonkers, tried to claim his bag on the night of Aug. 27 when the United Airlines employee asked to see his checked bag ticket. According to Port Authority Police, Sappleton refused to show the ticket and punched the victim repeatedly. When the victim fell to the fl oor, he continued his assault by kicking him. The 23-year-old airline employee was taken to Elmhurst Hospital to be treated for loose teeth, a split lip and contusions about his head and face, authorities said. Police arrested Sappleton outside of the terminal. He was given a desk appearance ticket and ordered to appear in court on Sept. 30 on charges of assault and harassment, according to the Queens District Attorney’s offi ce.
