4 The Courier sun • SEPTEMBER 1, 2016 for breaking news visit www.qns.com Giving thanks to the vets To honor those who defended their country with pride, state Senator Joe Addabbo held his annual veterans barbecue on Aug. 22 at the Howard Beach Motor Club. More than 200 veterans were welcomed and enjoyed a day of music, drinks and food donated by more than a dozen local businesses and organizations. Addabbo was on hand to pitch in along with Assembly candidate Stacey Pheffer- Amato. “Even though we have a few days throughout the year specifically aimed at remembering the courage and sacrifices of veterans, I have always felt it is important to make them feel appreciated every single day,” Addabbo said. “These men and women put their lives on the line to protect our freedom and our way of life, while making countless other sacrifices along the way. If there is something we can do, no matter how small, to show them we are grateful, we should do it.” Photo courtesy of Eric Ulrich’s office From left to right: Alan Zwirn, Howard Beach Lindenwood Civic president, Joann Ariola; Councilman Eric Ulrich; and the Howard Beach Lindenwood Civic vice presidents Extra days of trash pickup are coming to Howard Beach By Anthony Giudice agiudice@qns.com/@A_GiudiceReport Howard Beach and the surrounding areas will be much cleaner thanks to Councilman Eric Ulrich. Last week Ulrich announced that the entire 32nd Council District will be getting two extra days of trash pickup. The lawmaker has set aside a total of $60,669 for the additional days of trash pickup throughout his district. “Trash and litter on our streets have been a serious quality of life issue in Coleman Square and throughout my district. By increasing the frequency of trash pickups we can reduce litter throughout our community,” Ulrich said. “This is just one of the many cleanup initiatives that we have undertaken to keep our neighborhoods clean and preserve our quality of life.” Ulrich was joined by members of the Howard Beach Lindenwood Civic Association in Coleman Square when he made the announcement on Tuesday, Aug. 23. Currently, the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) funds pickup from trash receptacles on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Ulrich’s additional funding will provide for trash pickups on Tuesdays and Fridays. “The Department of Sanitation is pleased to work with Council member Ulrich to improve the cleanliness of Coleman Square and other portions of Council District 32,” said Kathryn Garcia, DSNY commissioner. “We appreciate Council member Ulrich’s support in our efforts to keep city streets and sidewalks clean and safe. The Department has found that partnerships are an essential tool in accomplishing goals. Elected officials, city residents and Sanitation can work together to make our neighborhoods a source of pride to the people who live and work there.” “We appreciate the effort and solution that Council member Eric Ulrich has put forth regarding the unsanitary conditions at Coleman Square,” said Joann Ariola, president of the Howard Beach Lindenwood Civic Association. “The additional two days of waste removal and the upgraded waste baskets is something that the civic had identified as a need. The council member took quick action and appropriated the funding necessary to make sure that Coleman Square, a gateway to Howard Beach, is clean when welcoming travelers and commuters to our community.” Local lawmaker distributes free school supplies to the Jamaica community By Suzanne Monteverdi smonteverdi@qns.com/@smont76 Back to school was made a lot easier for families in southern Queens thanks to the efforts of one local lawmaker. Senator James Sanders and local volunteers gave out 1,000 school supplies to students from kindergarten to high school outside of the Walgreens at the corner of Guy R. Brewer and Baisley boulevards in Jamaica on Saturday, Aug. 27. “Today we did what we do best: serve the people,” Senator Sanders said. “It is rewarding to know that these students will head back to school a little more prepared thanks to the supplies they received today.” The school supplies, provided by sponsor Walgreens, included backpacks, compositions books, spiral notebooks and loose leaf paper. DJ Infinite was also on hand to play music for the families at the three-hour affair. “This is a beautiful event,” said Shavonne Haughton, Jamaica resident and mother of two. “They are so excited to go back to school.” Photo courtesy of the office of Senator Sanders Senator Sanders and volunteers give out free school supplies.
