You love the look of all of the new cabinets and would love to have some at home. Unfortunately, new kitchen cabinets are just not within your budget, so you will have to make do with what you have. Fortunately, there are a couple of ways that you can jazz up your kitchen cabinets. The easiest way to transform tired, old cabinets is to give them a fresh coat of paint. While you are up to that task and have already chosen the color, you’d like to take it a step further and make a few of the cabinets really stand out. In that case, you might want to consider inserting glass into some of the cabinet doors, especially if you have a collection of dishes or cookbooks that you would like to display. Inserting glass into kitchen cabinet doors is not a difficult task. First, you need to locate the glass shops in your area and see what types of glass they have to offer. Options may include clear, frosted, ribbed, seeded and perhaps even leaded or stained glass. In order to make your selection, you must consider the style of your kitchen as well as the contents of the cabinets. For a country kitchen, you might want to use leaded glass for cabinets where you intend to display a pottery collection, whereas for a modern kitchen, you might want to use frosted glass for cabinets where the contents are not on display. While you are making your selection, you should also find out if the shop will insert the glass for you and how much they will charge to do so. Depending upon your budget and skills, you may want to have the glass shop insert the glass into the doors for you. If you decide to insert the glass yourself, you will need a screwdriver, router, chisel, tape measure and some clips to hold the glass in. You may be able to purchase the clips from the shop where you plan to buy the glass. Once you have the necessary supplies, you can follow these steps to insert the glass into your cabinet doors: 1. Take off all of the doors in which you plan to add glass. 2. Remove the center panel from each of the doors with a router. 3. Chisel out the remaining rounded corners on each door. 4. Measure the opening of each door, adding half an inch all the way around, and take the dimensions to a glass shop and order glass. Make sure you ask for the edges of the glass to be smoothed. 5. Place each piece of glass on the back of the appropriate frame and secure it with clips. Along with glass, you may want to add some sort of light metal sheetwork like tin to your cabinet doors. Keep in mind that for the metal to show, you will need to use clear glass. To insert the metal, all you need to do is cut it to fit on the back of the glass and secure it with glazing points every three or four inches. Jazzing up your kitchen cabinets with glass and metal is fairly easy to do yourself. If you have the money, you may even be able to leave it to the pros and have the glass shop do it for you! Whatever way you go, you’re sure to have cabinets with character and space to display your favorite collectibles. REAL ESTATE SALES • RENTAL/COMMERCIAL Providing REAL Services & REAL Solutions!
