8 THE COURIER SUN • AUGUST 15, 2013 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.couriersun.com PARENTS CAUTIOUS AFTER TEEN ARRESTED IN MCDONALD’S SEX ASSAULT BY MAGGIE HAYES [email protected] Anzy Dumorney, a Jamaica resident, watched carefully as his four children climbed through the tunnels and ropes of a McDonald’s play area – the site of a sexual assault just over a day before. “It’s crazy, but I’m not going to stop them from having fun,” said Dumorney, who lives a few blocks from the Hillside Avenue spot. “As long as I’m sitting here watching them, I don’t mind.” On Tuesday, August 6 at roughly 8:30 p.m. a 14-year-old boy allegedly sexually assaulted a fouryear old girl while inside one of the tubular play structures, police said. The child reportedly broke free and told her mother what happened, but the mother could not keep hold of her daughter’s attacker. The unidentifi ed boy was originally thought to be between 18 and 30, but then police discovered he was a teen. He was arrested and charged with a criminal sexual act. Dumorney’s children, all girls ages 4 to 7, played happily after the incident until a McDonald’s employee came into the play area and told them the section was closed. The employee said there is no timetable to reopen the play place. Dumorney, who frequents the McDonald’s with his kids, said he has never seen any child who looks over the age of 10 playing in the structure. Howard Beach man convicted in sex assault BY MAGGIE HAYES [email protected] A Howard Beach man has been convicted following a sexual assault earlier this year. Richard Kassebaum, 42, was working at a Woodhaven laundromat in March when he approached a female customer at about 4:30 a.m. as she exited the store, grabbed her from behind and choked her. Kassebaum then grabbed the victim’s buttocks, and after she screamed, he fl ed the location, according to trial testimony. “Kassebaum poses a serious threat to public safety and, under the circumstances, a signifi cant prison sentence is more than warranted,” said District Attorney Richard Brown. The “sexual predator” was convicted on Thursday, August 1 on fi rst and third-degree sexual abuse and criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation. The charges followed a one-week jury trial before the borough’s Supreme Court. Video surveillance from the laundromat revealed Kassebaum inside the establishment, then standing in the parking lot as the victim left. Kassebaum was then seen walking behind the woman and following her onto Woodhaven Boulevard. Video footage shortly afterwards shows Kassebaum running back and reentering the laundromat, said Brown. Sentencing is scheduled for Thursday, August 15. Kassebaum, who has been held in jail in lieu of bail set at $50,000, faces up to seven years in prison.
