Senior dies from
bomb blast injuries
Th e Springfi eld Gardens man injured
aft er opening up a bomb left in a package
on his doorstep has died, police
announced on Aug. 1, as the search for
the suspects who left the explosive continues.
Law enforcement sources said the blast
occurred at 4:15 p.m. on July 28 at the
home of 73-year-old George Wray in the
vicinity of 222nd Street and 145th Road.
According to police, Wray discovered
the explosive device — contained within
a cylinder that was about the size of a
Quaker Oats can — near the entrance to
his residence. NYPD Chief of Detectives
Robert Boyce said the device went off
when the victim went to open it, causing
the man to suff er second- and third-degree
burns over 80% of his body.
“Th ere is substantial evidence left from
this device, which appears to be a victim
actuated device; the explosion was
caused by opening the package,” Boyce
said. “We consider this a low-explosive;
there was no shrapnel associated with this
device.”
Offi cers from the 105th Precinct and
EMS units responded to the incident.
Paramedics rushed Wray to Nassau
University Medical Center, where he died
on Aug. 1.
According to published reports, police
learned that the package contained a single
name that was not disclosed to the
press. It was not, however, linked to anyone
living inside the man’s residence.
No arrests have been made, and the

Bayside burglar steals
cash on the Fourth
Police are searching for a man who
spent his Fourth of July sneaking into a
Bayside home to steal some cash.
On July 4 at around 4:49 a.m., an
unidentifi ed male entered a residence in
the vicinity of 32nd Avenue and 201st
Street through an open side window,
according to authorities. Th e perpetrator
then proceeded to pocket $200 and
fl ee the home.
Th e suspect is described as a male, fi ve
foot 10 inches tall with black hair. He was
seen in a 1996 Toyota RAV 4 SUV.

Detective Squad is investigating.

Probe continues in Rego
Park hit-and-run
Police are investigating an apparent hitand
run incident early in the morning on
Aug. 1 in Rego Park that claimed the life
of a male pedestrian.
At around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1,
offi cers from the 112th Precinct responded
to a 911 call of a male struck by a vehicle
at the corner of 63rd Drive and Booth
Street.
Upon their arrival, the found an
unidentifi ed man, believed to be in his
30s, lying in the roadway, unconscious
and unresponsive with head and body
trauma. EMS responded and transported
the victim to Forest Hills Hospital, where
he was pronounced dead.
According to WABC-TV, witnesses to
the accident told investigators that the
victim had been walking down the sidewalk
prior to the accident and appeared
to be intoxicated. Aft er the man was hit,
a white four-door sedan was seen going
in reverse down Booth Street before fl eeing
the scene.
No arrests have been made at this time.

Gun-toting crook steals
$10K from LIC bank
Armed with a gun and a demand note,
a bandit swiped more than $10,000 in
cash from a Long Island City bank in
the aft ernoon on July 28, according to
police.
Law enforcement sources said the
robbery occurred sometime
before 5:50 p.m. on July 28 at
the Chase bank located at 25-15
Queens Plaza North, near 27th
Street.
Authorities said the suspect
— described as a black
male standing 5 foot 4 inches
tall — walked into the branch,
approached a teller and presented
a note demanding $50,000
in cash. He then unzipped the
sweater he was wearing and
revealed the butt of a black fi rearm
in his waistband.
According to police, the teller
provided the crook with $10,900
in cash; the suspect then took the money
and fl ed the scene on foot, heading westbound
on Queens Plaza North.
Offi cers from the 114th Precinct
responded to the reported robbery;
there were no injuries.
Th e same bank was the target of an
attempted heist back in March, but it
does not appear to be connected to the
July 28 incident.
Th e NYPD Major Case Squad is conducting
the investigation.
