Should my pets be on flea/tick preventatives year round?
Absolutely recommended if your pets go outside they should be on
preventatives. Fleas and ticks don't hibernate, they're out there just
waiting to hitch a ride and start feeding.
What can I do to keep my pets teeth healthy?
There are a number of things you can do to help improve oral health
in your furry family member. ��Periodontal disease is one of the most
important conditions in our pets that can be preventable or at
minimum slow down its progression. The best is brushing those
pearly whites at minimum twice a week or �� more often if you can.
Next is giving good treats that help with oral hygiene, look for the
VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Counsel) seal of approval on the
products. There are some oral gels, water additives and dental wipes
that are also great. Remember take your pet in and have them
evaluated, they may need a general cleaning, polishing, possibly
some extractions. ��There's no such thing as anesthesia-less dentals,
those are dangerous and don't do a thorough job.
What is a microchip and is it safe?
A microchip is a chip about the size of ��a grain of rice that is injected
under your pet's skin. Each chip is able to be scanned and has a
unique set of numbers that can ID your pet if they are ever lost, even
if their collar with ID tags has slipped off. You just need to register
their chip with your contact information, which can easily be mailed in
or done on line. Vet offices, shelters, and even police precincts have
scanners available, so they can check if a chip is present and contact
you if they are found. It is completely safe, and I even have my own
dog microchipped.
Do I just need to worry about Lyme disease if my pet
gets ticks?
Lyme disease is transmitted by a specific species of tick which can
transmit other diseases as well. However, there are many species of
ticks out there that carry diseases so make sure you keep both dogs
and cats on flea/tick preventatives year round. You can also
vaccinate your dog against Lyme disease, and of course if you have
found a tick on your pet, you can bring your pet in to be tested.
