FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com JUNE 23, 2016 • The Courier sun 45 GOLDENVOICE SHOWS COMMITMENT TO QUEENS COMMUNITY WITH OUTREACH, GIVEBACKS AND THEIR SPONSORSHIP OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG’S WONDERFUL WORLD FESTIVAL The third annual Louis Armstrong Wonderful World festival, a free-to-the public concert on July 16 in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, is quickly becoming a Queens summer tradition. This year’s lineup highlights the rich jazz heritage of New Orleans, featuring Dr. John, Soulive and Kermit Ruffins, an A-list bill booked by Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College. Goldenvoice, a festival sponsor has provided financial, marketing, and artistic support in its ongoing commitment to working with Queens institutions and community groups. “We have been working on this with Goldenvoice since last September and they have been phenomenal in their desire to help make Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World Festival a world-class event, and in their commitment to working with us,” said Jeffrey Rosenstock, executive director at of the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College and assistant vice president for external and governmental relations at the school. “We are very proud to be sponsoring the Louis Armstrong Festival this year, both as tribute to one of the true American musical geniuses of our time, and to the borough of Queens, where he lived for almost 30 years,” said Mark Shulman, festival producer at Goldenvoice. Goldenvoice is also producing PANORAMA, a three-day music and arts festival making its debut in nearby Randall’s Island Park on July 22-24. The company is planning to hold future editions of PANORAMA -- a modern day World’s Fair featuring music, technology driven art installations, and some of the finest, culturally diverse food Queens has to offer -- at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, beginning in summer 2017. Shulman said his core team has been meeting with Queens community groups, businesses and elected officials since February 2014 to develop the best ways to support the community and give back to Queens. “We’ve been out there for more than two years, getting to know Queens and its people in all walks of life to develop the best way to make and leave a lasting footprint here in our 2017 PANORAMA festival and for many years afterward,” Shulman said. The plan is to hold the 2017 edition of PANORAMA -- named for the 9,335-square-foot exhibit panorama of New York City exhibit at the Queens Museum -- in the north end of the park, with three stages and two tents. As with their Coachella festivals in California, Goldenvoice would set up a three-day community health clinic to provide real medical care – not just screenings -- and would work with the community to establish a volunteer component to give 100 fans free passes in exchange for 12 hours of local community service. Shulman said groups such as Make the Road New York, the Jackson Heights Green Alliance, and Aliazana de Ligas Latinas de Futbol support Goldenvoice’s plans to hold the 2017 Panorama festival in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Elected officials including Congressman Joe Crowley and City Council members Karen Koslowitz, Peter Koo, Rory Lancman and Julissa Ferraras-Copeland have openly expressed support for Panorama. All represent communities surrounding the park. “I applaud Panorama’s investment in New York City,” Ferraras Copeland (D-Corona) said. “Their support of Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World Event in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and their investment in young people of color learning computer coding shows that Panorama is committed to partnering with our community. They are also providing an excellent opportunity for young students to access the entertainment industry with their education program partnered with Union Settlement.” Goldenvoice has pledged that its 2017 festival would not conflict with the Louis Armstrong event, nor with many of the other big summer events in Queens. “Goldenvoice has expressed their desire to benefit Queens in any way possible and supporting this festival is an example of that,” Rosenstock said. “We appreciate their support of Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful Word festival. They understand that Louis Armstrong was a goodwill ambassador to Queens -- and the entire music world – and they want our festival to reflect that in every way.”
