52 THE COURIER SUN • JUNE 19, 2014 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.couriersun.com VICTORIA SCHNEPS vschneps@queenscourier.com Being a party animal It was a week balanced with work and celebrations and remarkable fundraising events, and I relished each one. Particularly I adored meeting my journalism hero Charlie Rose, who was honored this past week by the Museum of the Moving Image. The honorees were Charlie Rose and Richard Plepler, chairman and CEO of HBO. Since I can remember, my dad, who was caring, loving, hardworking, and dedicated to his family, adored Charlie Rose and from the time he retired never missed a day of seeing Rose’s interview show. If Dad wasn’t home it was taped and viewed the next day. No one could interrupt him when he was watching his favorite show. So it’s no surprise that I, too, respected and was inspired by Charlie’s powerful interview style with the people he invited to be at his round oak table. When I do my TV shows, now on Brooklyn cable, I like to look the person I’m interviewing in the eye and have them feel we are just talking over a cup of coffee, forgetting there is a camera looking at me and my guest. I love how Charlie leans in and lets his curiosity lead the conversation. He and I share an insatiable curiosity about people. It’s what makes my career so much fun! And fi nally I met the man I had admired for decades. When he came into the ballroom at the St. Regis Hotel, I approached him and boldly said, “I’m so happy to see the man I go to sleep with and wake up with in the morning!” It’s true! I watch his 11 p.m. interview show then tune him in at 7 a.m. for the CBS morning show. He replied with a big smile and I asked him to take some pictures with my friends and donors to the museum. He delightedly followed me and we took these photos. It was a magical night honoring the two of them, who got a good ribbing from the “MC” John Oliver, the genius of late night HBO TV. I also got to see in the fl esh the very beautiful Nora O’Donnell, who shared with me that her parents worked at Creedmoor while she was growing up in Queens. More reason to love her! And I congratulated her on being recognized by her peers as Broadcaster of the Year. Joining her was Gayle King, who looked as stunning in person as on TV. They were there to cheer for their beloved Charlie who they later introduced as he was honored. Their show has received the best early morning ratings that CBS has had in 19 years. I’m a devoted viewer and never miss it. Their energy and the chemistry between them makes for great viewing. I like their calm, warm, informative styles that mesh perfectly. It helped the magic that night to be in the six glistening crystal chandeliered intimate ball room at the St. Regis Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. I forgave the Queens-based museum for leaving Queens for their fundraiser when they proudly announced that they had had their most successful event ever! Congratulations to the Museum of the Moving Image and their great leadership. The museum offers half-price tickets at our Sunday fl ea market on the grounds of the Astoria Kaufman Studio’s backlot on 36th Street, just down the block. Zac Broner at The Dalton School graduation Then it was graduation week also. I took on the role of proud grandmother as my dearest Zac Broner graduated from The Dalton School in Manhattan, and 5-year-old Jonah and Morgan from preschool. Zac is off to Johns Hopkins University and Jonah and Morgan to kindergarten. Two ends of the spectrum and my heart swelled with pride as they took the next steps in their lives. Then on Saturday night I attended a graduation only the marvelous Mattone family could pull off. They celebrated the graduation of six of their grandchildren Mattone style, surrounded by their eight children and their children and friends. It was a WOW night! These young people are our future and boy, are they a fabulous crop.
