Bayside:
Th e fi rst settlers of Bayside were Matinecock Native
Americans who came to the neighborhood around 2000
B.C.E. In the 17th century, English colonists came to the
area, when it was mostly farmland. By 1920, it became a
popular neighborhood for actors and actresses, who purchased
property here aft er hearing about rumors that a
movie studio would open in the area. When the studio
didn’t materialize, many artists left . Today, it is home to
approximately 44,000 people and is one of the wealthier
neighborhoods in Queens. Th e median income in Bayside
is $95,114 and includes the highest performing school district
in New York City.
Bay Terrace:
A sub-neighborhood of Bayside, the area includes gated
condominiums like Bay Club and Bayridge condos. Bay
Terrace is bounded on the west by the Clearview Expressway,
on the south by 26th and 28th Avenues and to the east and
north by the Little Neck Bay. Th e area remained rural until
the 1950s when Cord and Charles Meyer sold off their 2225-
acre farm. Th e median family income at Bay Terrace is $103,
263 and the current population is 13,392.
Oakland Gardens:
Located in southern Bayside, Oakland Gardens is bounded
to the north by the Long Island Expressway, to the east
by Alley Pond Park, to the south by Union Turnpike and
to the west by Cunningham Park. It is considered a middle
class neighborhood. Fredrick Newbold Lawrence, a colonel
in the Civil War and president of the Stock Exchange,
built a mansion there in 1847 called Th e Oaks, which may
be where the neighborhood got its name from. Th e median
income there is $54,031.
Windsor Park:
Th is cooperative, which was established in 1983, sits on 46
acres and consists of 1,830 apartments. Approximately 5,000
residents live in the one-, two-and three-bedroom apartments.
With 2,000 parking spots, a pool and tennis center,
playgrounds and community rooms, Windsor Terrace is an
important part of the greater Bayside community.
