The yearly event, which honors the gifted lyricist Kyle “KAPO” Daniels who was tragically killed at gunpoint, took place at the Presbyterian Church of Saint Albans on 190-04 119th Ave. The concepts of love, unity, awareness and perseverance were masterfully unfolded through spiritual praise, poetry and exhilarating dance performances. After a welcome introduction by Shelton and Robin Daniels, father and aunt of the late Kyle, an opening prayer by Rosemarie Williams set a tone of righteousness for the night. A heartfelt song entitled “Kyle” was expressed by Kairis Daniels, Kyle’s sister and founder of the KAPO Movement. She deeply reflected on her brother’s love and legacy through sentimental lyrics like “My brother told me, ‘Follow your aspirations, know what you’re doing and do it with dedication,’” accompanied by graceful dance moves.  During the unity segment, the Divine Power dance ministry portrayed a sense of militancy in their “Waging War” performance. The female dancers boldly exhibited fighting gestures that urged victims of physical pain, heartbreak and other issues to conquer their obstacles with strength, fearlessness and resilience. Rapper K. Willz vented his frustrations about being a black man in America who may endure police brutality and racism. He ended his “Real Rap” rap song with a message that projected his determination to be successful in life. Poet Xavier Buck gave a heart-wrenching spoken word performance that emphasized his inner anger towards the “Charleston 9” church shooting and countless murders of African-American males and females like Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Sean Bell and Sandra Bland, who died at the hands of police officers. He encouraged the audience to sing the Negro spiritual “Wade in the Water” as he reflected on harsh tribulations in black history like slavery and KKK lynchings. Other performers like Jay Jones and the Humphrey Family Ministry delivered messages of self-love and “knowing your worth” throughout the awareness portion of the show. “For me the performance meant love, unity, coming together for a common cause, being aware and persevering to get the desired results. Personally, it meant giving back to the community and encouraging others to join the movement for peace. Kapodat,” said performer Jay Jones to describe the significance of her poem, ending with Kyle’s signature “KAPODAT” slogan. The final segment hammered home the idea of perseverance, as Divine Power performed “Live Through It” with smooth rhythms and a motivational message of prevailing. The dance ministry closed the show with a triumphant routine, “It’s Alright,” as the dancers shared warm smiles and synchronized steps to represent victory. “I felt free. I felt like I was being listened to. I felt like I actually had an opportunity to share what I’ve been feeling and what my family has been feeling since the passing of Kyle,” founder Kairis Daniels said in reference to her emotional experience on stage. “I was getting a lot off my chest and it felt good to feel free.” The KAPO Movement strives to unite and empower the black community through collaborative efforts.
