No-hitter propels College Point Rebels to opening day win

No one could have asked for a better start from Gavin
O’Connor.
Th e College Point Rebels starting pitcher tossed a
no-hitter on Opening Day of the LI Hot Stove Travel
League against the Syosset Braves, propelling the Rebels
to a 10-0 win.
O’Connor struck out four Braves hitters, but walked
two, keeping his no-hitter from being a perfect game.
Th e 12U Rebels were tremendous on both sides of the
fi eld. With O’Connor pitching lights out on the mound,
shortstop Tanner Fried drove in a team-high four runs
with two extra base hits. Along with his exceptional hitting
display, Fried ended up saving the no-hitter with a
spectacular diving play just on the outfi eld grass.
Fried wasn’t the only one who played great defensively.
Right fi elder Carmine Savino made a couple
clutch grabs, while Brian Baek made fi ve plays at
third base. A total of three Rebels reached base four
times during the game, including Baek, catcher Evan
Antzoulis and second baseman Shane Sullivan. Ryan
and Matthew Neville also joined the Rebels’ hitting
party with a pair of RBIs each.
Th e Rebels coaching staff , consisting of manager
Alexander Fried and coaches Tom Neville, Debra
Neville and Keith O’Connor are looking forward to
Peter Vanechanos and Steven Kubic playing in their
next game aft er being on the injured reserve for opening
day.
Th e College Point Rebels will play its next game on
Saturday, May 5, in Glen Cove against the Glen Cove
Lightning.
