yet another one in Long Island City.
The hotel, which will be located at 38-59
11th St., will rise 16 stories and include
116 rooms, according to permits filed
with the Department of Buildings. The
project will span 54,164 square feet, The
Real Deal first reported.
According to permits, the building will
also include 31 parking spots in the cellar.
Last November, The Real Deal analyzed
upcoming hotel projects in the five
boroughs and found that Long Island City
was the most popular spot for hotel development
outside of Manhattan. Since 2010,
there have been 45 hotel projects planned
in the neighborhood, the outlet found.
LIC Partnership, the neighborhood’s
development corporation, released a real
estate snapshot in 2017 that outlined how
much development Long Island City has
seen and should expect.
As of March 2017, there were 29 hotels
operating in the neighborhood and an
additional 35 in the planning or construction
phases. This translates to more then
2,900 current hotel rooms and more than
4,670 future hotel rooms.
Local residents have been weary of hotel
announcements, as the mayor’s office has
been using hotels to get the homeless crisis
in the city under control. Last month,
the Department of Homeless Services
announced that it would open one of several
permanent transitional homes at a
Fairfield Inn in the Blissville section of
Long Island City.
Residents were outraged, arguing that
with addition of this new shelter, the
number of homeless people will outnumber
residents. The City View Inn, located
at 33-17 Greenpoint Ave., began admitting
homeless families last July and the
city recently moved the families out to
begin housing 100 homeless men in the
hotel.
The nearby Best Western Hotel at 38-05
Hunters Point Ave. also houses about 150
homeless families.
Gene Kaufman Architect PC is responsible
for the design of this new hotel. It is
not clear when construction will be completed
and Li did not respond to a request
for comment as of press time.
