8 THE COURIER SUN • HEALTH/FITNESS • APRIL 3, 2014 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.couriersun.com HEART DISEASE AND WOMEN Heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are the number one killer of women in the United States. One in four deaths in women is from heart disease. Most cardiac health issues in women are linked to poor lifestyle choices regarding diet, exercise and smoking, and can be prevented. Just one risk factor doubles the risk of heart disease. Having two risk factors increases that risk four times. Three or more risk factors increase heart disease risk more than ten times and more than 75 percent of women between 40 and 60 have one or more risk factors for heart disease. You can control most risk factors, but not all, states doctors at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. The risk factors that can be controlled include: • Smoking is the most important risk factor that women can control. Only two cigarettes a day can increase risk of heart disease. • High blood cholesterol levels. • High blood pressure • Diabetes, which doubles a woman’s risk of developing heart disease. Estrogen provides women with some protection against heart disease, but usually not in women with diabetes • Overweight and obesity and an unhealthy diet can raise the risk of heart disease. • Lack of exercise: Inactive people are nearly twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who are physically active. The reality is that heart disease kills more women than all types of cancer combined. Jamaica Hospital cardiologists are available to provide consultation for patients with heart disease.
