CULLEN tcullen@queenscourier.com For the first time since Sandy, the Broad Channel branch of the Queens Public Library is open, signaling that things are getting back to normal in Queens. More than 16,000 books were lost as the library took up to two feet of water in the storm, ultimately causing $940,000 in damage. The branch’s reopening was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, March 6. “Queens Library at Broad Channel is a pivotal resource for all ages, an information hub and a community hub,” said Library president and CEO Thomas Galante. “We are so grateful to Commissioner David Burney and the NYC Department of Design and Construction for all their hard work in getting the library reopened in record time. We look forward to seeing every library in Queens rebuilt to full capacity and serving library customers with books, job skills training, after school enrichment and everything they depend on their libraries to provide.” To help get libraries get back open, educational publisher Scholastic has donated 40,000 books to the Queens Public Library. “As part of our one million book donation to help schools and libraries in the northeast recover from Superstorm Sandy, Scholastic is proud to support the Queens Library by restocking its shelves with beautiful, new children’s books to serve the children and families of the community,” said Greg Worrell, president, Scholastic Classroom and Community Group. “We know that reading and stories can help children find comfort and build resilience in the face of difficulty and that for many families, particularly those who lost all the books in their homes, the library is key to their recovery. ” Borough President Helen Marshall, Councilmembers Eric Ulrich and Jimmy Van Bramer and representatives from Queens Public Library helped reopen the Broad Channel branch. Councilmember Eric Ulrich, who represents Broad Channel, complimented the island’s community for its bounceback after the storm.
