FRANCIS PREP STUDENT ARTISTS EARN TOP HONORS IN DISTINGUISHED COMPETITION Students from St. Francis Prep’s Art Department have been recognized as Scholastic Art & Writing Awards Winners. This is the second year in a row they have earned this prestigious recognition. Students from across the nation submitted 255,000 works of art and writing to the Scholastic Art Competition. More than 68,000 were recognized at the regional level and celebrated in local exhibitions and ceremonies. The top 2,000 works in the country earned National Medals and were celebrated at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall. Prep students Kristina Ciklic, Hanna Kim, and Eden T. Lutchmedial earned Honorable Mention. Prep students Alysia Boodram, Ashley Chen, and Emily Guevara earned Silver Keys, and were commended with an awards ceremony at the New School. And finally, Jennifer Paredes, Sunyoung Park were Gold Key recipients. They will have their work displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art with potential scholarship money to The Savannah School of Art and Design, and a chance to attend an award ceremony at Carnegie Hall. For Sunyoung Park, a senior at Prep, she was surprised and happy when she learned she had earned a Gold Key, especially after having earned Honorable Mention last year. Her submitted work, “Waste Never Dies,” is a poster about the environment. She’s very happy and proud to have her work being displayed at The Met. She plans to major in advertising in the fall, and is choosing between the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and the School of Visual Arts in New l-r Prep Principal Patrick McLaughlin, Art Department Chairperson Jeanne Buccino, Ashley Chen, Jennifer Paredes, Hanna Kim, Sunyoung Park, Alysia Boodram, and Art faculty member, Diana Shmerykowsky. Prep Junior Jennifer Paredes submitted a work from her sophomore 2-D Design class entiltled “Spray Paint City.” She was very surprised when she found out she had earned a Gold Key, given she felt there were better submissions. Her family is very proud of her, and she feels it’s very impressive and a confidence boost to have her work displayed at The Met. She’s hoping to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology or Pasons School of Design upon graduating Prep, and study graphic design.
