He was a wonderful match for me because since The Couriers were founded in 1985 I have had, on and off, a Daily News man as my editor. Lou was the best of the best. A mutual friend, Jim Rodgers, had known Lou for years and bumped into me on Bell Boulevard and asked if I needed an editor. It seems that since Lou had retired from his years as managing editor of the Daily News he was home a lot. His wife Carol had said (not in these exact words), “I married you for better or worse, but not for lunch” and so he was willing to talk to me about going back to work at our newspapers. Lou was a big man both physically and personally. When we met it was instant love. I offered him a second career and he began almost immediately after we met. I loved and respected his knowledge and experience and he never let me down. He led us to our next level of excellence. I’m a big believer that a leader is only as good as the people around him, and sure enough Lou put together a top notch team. In fact our present editor-in-chief, Toni Cimino, was his protege and I know she makes him proud. During Lou’s tenure, through his talent and knowledge, he led and trained our reporting staff, resulting in our earning many professional awards from our peers at the New York State Press Association. But most importantly, as Jack Valenti said about Lyndon B. Johnson, “I sleep better at night knowing you sit as our president.” So I felt when Lou was my leader. Rest in peace my friend. You will be missed. Doing good in our world My daughter-in-law, Mimi Broner, visits often and last week she brought with her a package of coffee beans. The manufacturer is a client of her husband, Jim. Ordinarily I’d just put it away, but because I had to grind the beans I took a longer look at the packaging. The coffee beans were grown in Rwanda by a company whose mission is making a difference, from creating schools to improving the livelihood of coffee farmers. He will be missed. A unique product While I was on a weekend in Manhattan, I met Richard DiFred at an upscale store’s cosmetic counter. He is bringing a unique product to the marketplace, Imperial Yucatan Honey. It’s a certified organic white flower honey from the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. As he explained “after many years in the luxury goods market and gaining extensive experience with production and manufacturing, I wanted to create a product that would navigate in these two markets and bring about a change in both the specialty food market and high-end specialty retail market.” It’s a very personal voyage for Richard. He has developed the product, which is great to eat, but, more importantly for me, if applied on your skin for 15 minutes each day for 10 days it will take 10 years away. Wow! Stay tuned!
