With a great display of possession soccer, many of the BWG teams finished first or second in their group. The BWG 2008 group won their final game against Gold Coast FC by a score of 8-1 to win first place in their group. On Saturday, BWG 2007 defeated the Brooklyn Italians 3-1 to win first place in their group. On Sunday, the team won the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL) championship in Bayside. The BWG 2006 White team won first place in their division, winning their final game against Queens City FC, by a score of 3-1. The BWG 2005 groups were split in two for the tournament. Both groups finished in second in their divisions. The first group lost on penalty kicks to Cedar Stars after time expired with the scored tied 2-2. The second group won second place after losing their final game to Soccer Fun for Kids, 4-2. The next day, the 2005 group played a year up, and again earned second place, after losing to the BWG 2004 team in the finals. The BWG 2004 group won first place, defeating the BWG 2005 team, 5-1. BWG 2003 beat Manhattan SC Fury 1-0 to win first place. On the girls’ side, the BWG 2004 girls split their team, and both groups met in the finals, with the BWG White team winning with a 2-1 score. On another note, Jack McGlynn was selected to U.S. U-14 National Team. Jack will spend the week in U.S. camp this week in California. Photos courtesy of BWG Soccer Flyers see gold at the Diocesan Championship The St. Margaret’s/Resurrection Ascension Flyers brought home plenty of gold at the Diocesan Championship on Sunday, Feb. 12, at St. Anthony’s in South Huntington. The Diocesan gold medal winners include junior boy Ricky Hubert and bantam boy Andrew Kelly for their performance in the 800-meter run. Also winning gold were novice girls Caroline Gordon, Lena Olszowka, Madeline Mauceri and Grace Finnegan for their 600-meter medley. Senior boy Owen Kelly won gold for his amazing long jump, and the final Diocesan champs were junior boy Kacper Niepojok and bantam boy Conor O’Leary for their medal-winning performance in the 400-meter run. The Flyers’ silver medal winners were bantam girl Olai Higgins for her 400- meter run, novice boy Frank Santoro for his 200-meter run, and novice boy Thomas Fischer for his standing long jump. Several Flyers earned bronze medals as well, including bantam boy Kevin Isca and junior girl Linn Finnegan for their 55-meter dash. Receiving bronze for their 400-meter run were novice girl Aileen Mitarotonda and novice boy Finn Healing. The Flyers’ last bronze medalists were senior boy John Boger for his standing long jump, and senior boy Joseph Browne for his 55-meter dash. The peewee group didn’t come away empty-handed. Emily Pedicini, Sadie Donahue, Olivia Santoro, Nora Wrynn, and William Radu won ribbons for their 55-meter dash, while Ciara Reilly, Ethan Joseph and James Gordon earned ribbons for their 200-meter run. The Flyers’ coaches also want to congratulate the following runners for their amazing effort at the race. For their 200- meter run there is novice boy Anthony Pedicini; junior boys Victor Ostling, Christian Petrov and Armaan Sett; and bantam boys Josiah Boulet, Conn Reilly and Ronan O’Leary. Bantam girls Nora Olmo and Isabella Torres and junior girl Emma Torres also competed. Junior girl Roisin Wrynn, bantam boy Unai Higgins and junior boy Sean Walsh all performed admirably in the 400-meter run.
