Video shows crook who took cash in South Ozone Park stickup The NYPD released on Feb. 12 video and images of the suspect behind a recent stickup at a South Ozone Park convenience store. Authorities said the robbery occurred at 12:45 a.m. inside the Quick Save Deli at 118-02 Rockaway Blvd. Law enforcement agents said the perpetrator — described as a black man in his 40s standing 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds — approached the counter, then placed his hand inside his jacket pocket and simulated that he had a gun. The crook then demanded that the store clerk place money in a plastic bag. The 33-year-old male clerk complied with the suspect’s request, placing $70 in the bag, police said. The bandit then exited the shop and was seen fleeing the location in a dark-colored SUV. Officers from the 106th Precinct responded to the incident; there were no injuries. TEEN FLEES JAMAICA BASEMENT WHERE SHE WAS RAPED: DA A 20-year-old man has been charged with allegedly holding a 19-year-old girl against her will inside the basement of his family’s home and forcing her into prostitution, according to Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown. Dayshawn Preston of 199th Street in Hollis was arraigned on Wednesday charges of first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape, sex trafficking, second-degree promoting prostitution, third-degree assault and second-degree menacing. He was ordered held on $750,000 bail and his next court date is scheduled for Feb. 24; if convicted, he faces up to 25 years in prison. “The defendant allegedly held a young woman against her will for months and forced her to have sex with men for money in the basement of his family’s Queens home,” Brown said. “Prostitution is not a victimless crime. The woman — still in her teens — was threatened, beaten and escaped from her ordeal only after making a desperate call to 911. That call ended with her screaming as the defendant — allegedly struck her with a frying pan. The defendant faces a lengthy prison term for sex trafficking a very violent and degrading crime that cannot be tolerated.” Between Aug. 1, 2015, and Feb. 9, prosecutors said, Preston allegedly raped and beat then teen while forcing her to remain in the basement of his family’s home in Jamaica. He allegedly took the victim’s birth certificate, social security card and state ID, claiming she was now “his property” and therefore didn’t need to be in possession of the items. The teen, along with another, younger female victim, was allegedly forced to have sex with men for money and was repeatedly threatened with physical harm if she didn’t make at least $500 per night. On occasions when the victim didn’t turn over $500, she either was allegedly deprived of food or a shower or struck in the face. On Feb. 9, Brown said, the victim was able to grab a cellphone and run away from the house. She made a frantic 911 call, but Preston allegedly caught up with her and the two of them struggled for the phone. The phone eventually fell to the ground during the struggle and the last sound from that 911 recorded call is the high-pitched scream of a woman. DEADLY SUBWAY ACCIDENT IN KEW GARDENS; ANOTHER INJURED IN ELMHURST INCIDENT An intoxicated man was left in serious condition in an Elmhurst subway station on Feb. 15 after trying to board the train in between cars, according to FDNY. According an MTA spokesperson, the incident happened at around 3:25 p.m. Monday on the Brooklynbound R train platform at Woodhaven Boulevard. A frightened commuter who witnessed the scene said she became aware that something was wrong after hearing screams when the train slammed its brakes to stop. She said she feared the worst because the man was not moving and positioned between the gap of the train and the platform when she saw him. “It was terrifying seeing that,” said the woman, who preferred to remain anonymous. “I never witnessed anything like that.” FDNY said the unidentified man was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in serious condition. Another commuter also suffered a serious accident on the subway system a few hours later in Kew Gardens, this time with a tragic ending. As first reported by DNAinfo, an unidentified man died after being dragged by a subway car along a platform of the Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike station. NYPD said that the victim — a white male in his 60s — was trying to board a Brooklyn-bound F train when the doors closed on him at around 6:45 p.m. According to authorities, he was taken to Jamaica Hospital after sustaining a head trauma and was later pronounced dead.
