IN CELEBRATION OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Bringing relevancy, and historical perspective through
the use of eatre, Music and Dance
Jamaica, New York, January 30, 2020 — In celebration of Black History Month the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) presents an exciting
program lineup -- that includes a staging of Jeff Stetson’s powerful play, The Meeting; a classical music concert Classical Crossover, a tribute to African
American opera superstar, Jessye Norman; and community partnership programs with the Mari Meade Dance Company, International Black History
Month Festival, and Frankie African Dance Troupe and more.
JCAL’s celebration of Black History
Month begins on February 1st, with
a presentation of Jeff Stetson’s The
Meeting. The Play was written in
1987 and imagines a conversation
between two iconic African American
figures, Dr. Martin Luther King and
Malcolm X, at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. This powerful
face-off between these two dynamic leaders allows the audience a glimpse
at how each man might have arrived at their unique political, religious,
and philosophical stance, and leaves you with a haunting thought of what
might have been, had this meeting actually taken place. Winner of the
Louis B. Mayer Award and eight NAACP Theatre Awards, The Meeting will
be performed at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center on Saturday,February

The schedule of programs continue
on February 1st with a Workshop,
Performance and Talk Balk, focused
on the topic of forgiveness as it
pertains to the issue of racism.
Reframing Forgiveness: For Practical
Use in Dismantling Systemic Racism,
is part of The FORGIVENESS Project,
a unique organization focused on collecting and sharing stories that
bear witness to the resilience of the human spirit and act as a powerful
antidote to narratives of hate and dehumanization, presenting alternatives
to cycles of conflict, violence, crime and injustice. The social impact arts
organization B3W Performance Group, will perform their dance piece
FORGIVENESS - Part 1: Forgiving the Personal. This event will be hosted
at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center, on Saturday, February 1st. The free
Workshop takes place at 3:00pm; tickets for the performance (4:30pm),
and the Talk Back (5:30pm) are $15/General Admission, $10/students

On Saturday, February 8th at 7:30pm
- Immigration Stories, a performance
by the Mari Meade Dance Collective
with special guests, B3W Performance
Group, will take place at Jamaica
Performing Arts Center. Part of
The FORGIVENESS Project, this
performance ties together personal stories, live music, spoken word in
combination with dance and new media scenography to create something

The virtuoso piano duo Altino Brothers
present Classical Crossover, a tribute to
the legacy of world- renown American
soprano, Jessye Norman, at the Jamaica
Performing Arts Center (JPAC),153-

Hailed by critics for their dazzling piano
technique and full mastery of diverse genres of music, they will be joined on
stage by soprano twins, Cherisse & Cherissia Williams, and violinist Jessica
McJunkins, who was part of Beyonce and Jazy-Z’s On The Run II World Tour.

On February 22 from 4:15pm - 10:00pm, JCAL
will host the first ever International Black History
Month Film Festival, presented by the Queens
Underground 718, a creative organization
purposed with providing unique platforms for
artists, performers and entrepreneurs. The
festival will feature short films, music videos,
web series episodes and more, and will include
live performances, food, vendors, as well as
participation by the Central Queens Library, Queens Historical Society
and the Jamaica BID. A Red carpet event will be one of the highlights of

On February 23rd JCA: presents an
Intimate Conversations with Paige
Stewart, the 2019 Making Moves
Dance Festival Commissioned
Artist, featuring a performance by
The Kingdom Dance Company.
This presentation will involve the
audience in a conversation with
this talented dancer/choreographer that will focus on the creative process and
incorporating diverse voices under one roof. Paige Stewart’s Kingdom Dance
Company is a collective of artists from all across the New York City area.
This presentation will include a performance by the group and a master class
involving audience participation that will bring the entire evening full circle.
This event will take place at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center (JPAC) on

JCAL’s Black History Month
Celebration concludes with
a 2-day presentation by the
Fanike African Dance Troupe
under the direction of Patricia
Ghizamboule Robinson,
beginning on February 29 at
7:00pm. This is the troupe’s
13th Annual Black History
Month Cultural Gala Weekend and will include the premiere of Warrior,
Save Our Home, a work that pays homage to the African American men in
the community and those who are part of Black History. The dance involves
traditional African drums and culminates with the ritual offering of drink,
to the memory of the ancestors - also known as a libation ceremony. On
Sunday March 1st at 3:00pm, the group will present a Day of Culture II that
will include cultural workshops for the community; Talk, Walk & Dance -
Storytelling and Dance workshops for the entire family, with participation
by Queens Artist & Designer, Delali Haligah and featuring Fanike artists,
as well as adult African Master Dance Workshop, African dance and live
drumming with Cultural Consultant & Dancer, Shola Jones. For tickets
