A COURIER SUN SPECIAL SECTION CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK also inside Kids & Education section SJP students show skills at Science Olympiad BY ERICA SIUDZINSKI Students from St. John’s Preparatory School in Astoria shined at the Science Olympiad Competition at Columbia High School in Albany earlier this month. On Jan. 9, the SJP Science Olympiad Team journeyed to their first tournament of the year. The team was headed by Kevin Kiprovski, SJP alumnus from the class of 2011. The Science Olympiad Team features students interested in learning about various areas of science and showcasing unique talents. The team’s stellar performance blew Kiprovski out of the water. Among many accomplishments was Holly-anne Grell and Dave Chen’s showing at the cell biology event, placing in the top 10 in their first competition. Other highlights include Heidi Eustaquio and Chris Capunay’s sturdy bridge that held up under strenuous testing, and Lauren Campbell and Roger Unigarro’s excellence in stellar evolution in the astronomy event. Students participated in events across the spectrum of science and technology, from game design and fossil identification, to forensics and protein modeling.
