34 The Courier sun • JANUARY 14, 2016 for breaking news visit www.qns.com VICTORIA SCHNEPS-YUNIS vschneps@gmail.com When old is new again One of my unique delights has long been a visit to the historic, centuriesold Milleridge Inn in Jericho for dinner or lunch, especially for their delectable hard-to-find popovers and cinnamon loaf bread, as well as to attend parties in their elegant Cottage and then to shop in their multiple stores in the Village. Ironically Owen Smith, the omner for 50 years is my neighbor! My friends and I had a delightful holiday dinner there thinking it might be our last chance to visit and enjoy dinner while listening to holiday carolers. The inn had been sold and I feared it would close since the property was now owned by Kimco Realty Corporation, owner of the shopping center contiguous to the Milleridge. But I'm happy to report that an outpouring of neighborhood support in the form of 19,000 petition signers, along with town officials, convinced the property owner to lease the property to restaurateurs to enable it to carry on its tradition and historically important place in American history. The Dover Group, which runs prestigious catering halls and restaurants on the South Shore, teamed up with the Capetola Group, which operates the Carltun in Eisenhower Park, to operate, restore and improve the Milleridge. I had the pleasure of meeting both men and hearing their plan to keep Butch Yamali and Anthony Capetola at their Announcement most of the employees and add their own, with an emphasis on bringing in a great chef and doing interior and exterior renovations but keeping the integrity of the historic site intact. Butch Yamali, CEO of the Dover Group, has roots in Queens. His family owned the Pastrami King on Queens Boulevard. His dad owned the Dover Deli in Manhattan, and Butch worked there from childhood. The business is in his blood, owning legendary catering halls and restaurants, and now has added the Milleridge Inn to his group. And Anthony Capetola is renowned for his elegant Carltun, which includes hot spot restaurants the Patio and the Palm Court plus a wine cellar and cigar lounge. These two were vetted and chosen by the real estate company to operate the Milleridge Inn after an extensive search because of their experience and reputation for excellence. With a 30- year lease, the Smith family tradition and legacy of serving the public will continue in good hands! Stay tuned for the opening of their new bakery in “The Village.” Run, do not walk, for their unique delectable cinnamon bread. I adore the popovers but I think you have to be there at the Milleridge dining room for the mouthwatering experience. Forget your diet. They are worth every calorie! victoria’s secrets tweet me @vschneps ‘Lion King’ revisited The Elton John and Tim Rice music and lyrics for “The Lion King” are as good today as when they were written in 1994. Over the years, I’ve taken my children and grandchildren from Florida, Manhattan and now Long Island to see the classic show. It was my treat to bring my 4-year-old Addy who danced to the beautiful music (she had a little trouble staying in her seat), and transfixed Jonah to the show, and then to hear their thoughts of it. “Great! Amazing costumes, how they put them together and kept them on! Everyone was so good. They should be billionaires,” Jonah said. “I’m very excited that we went to ‘The Lion King.’” Addy laughed and loved that the bird was singing “Let it Go” from “Frozen” as part of one of the original songs in the play. They’ve obviously updated the lyrics, and there are many double entendres to keep the adults laughing in the packed house with families. I was again entranced by the music, costumes and choreography but I was particularly struck by two songs which are both a learning and entertaining experience. I was moved when they sing “Hakuna Matata!” which means “no worries.” I love the concept that they sing about the need to carry on even if all is not just right. An important life lesson. My other favorite is “The Circle of Life” about how we all live on in the family members born to us. It’s so powerful to know we leave a legacy in our children. Another profound message that I believe to be so true. The memorable musical never fails to make me cry with its powerful concluding scene. It’s theater that makes me smile, laugh, think and cry. This is what makes this show one of the greats of all time. Don’t miss it!
