BY ERICA SIUDZINSKI editorial@queenscourier.com/@QueensCourier Drawings by two children from Queens are featured in the 2016 Police Athletic League Calendar as a part of the PAL summer day camp program. Keiajah Harrigan and Jada Pantlitz will have their illustrations featured in the calendar for the months of September and November. Campers in the PAL program studied the world’s most famous landmarks and monuments while exploring the history and culture of the countries where they are located, worked on song and dance routines, and created art. The PAL calendar showcases the work of children from PAL centers from all fi ve boroughs. Keiajah, a seventh-grader from PAL’s Pathways Prep Center in St. Albans, has a drawing of the Great Pyramid of Giza, built for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu in 2550 B.C., featured for the month of September. Jada, a seventh-grader from PAL’s Goldie Maple Academy Beacon Center in Arverne, illustrated The Windmills at Kinderdijk, a group of famous windmills built in 1740 to drain the town of Kinderdijk in South Holland, for the month of November. “I see fi rsthand the great work our staff does with inner-city kids in need,” PAL Executive Director Frederick Watts said in a statement. “We offer a safe, nurturing environment where children can grow, play, learn and be inspired to great success.” Watts believes this environment, along with the hard work and creativity of the PAL staff, contributed to the creation of this beautiful calendar. New York City’s Police Athletic League is the fi rst civilian run group of its kind in the country, as well as the city’s largest, independent nonprofi t youth organization. Founded in 1914, the PAL has served the city’s young people for more than 100 years, providing recreational, educational, cultural and social activities to 35,000 children annually.
