TIMES, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2014 • 8 EXTRA EARS TO TRACK PLANES Noise Monitor Coming To Maspeth/M.V. by Robert Pozarycki Looking to gauge airplane noise levels and their impact on the community, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will soon install a monitor system in the Maspeth/Middle Village area. As announced by Rep. Grace Meng, the Port Authority is expected to install the device sometime in January. The agency—which operates New York City’s three major airports: LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty—is currently in the process of evaluating potential locations for the monitor. Recently, Meng noted, the Port Authority installed a portable noise monitor on a Flushing building to record data there. “These additional noise monitors are great news in our continued fight against the blistering airplane noise that continues to ruin the quality of life throughout our borough,” Meng said in a statement last Friday, Dec. 5. “The devices will -SEE NOISE ON PG. 55- Markey Takes The Oath In Maspeth With the new state legislative session beginning next month in Albany, Assemblywoman Margaret Markey (third from right) held a ceremonial inauguration last Friday, Dec. 5, at her Maspeth district office. Repairs To Close Soc. Sec. Branch Renovations At Rego Pk. Office Renovations will force the temporary closure of the Rego Park Social Security office through next spring, Rep. Grace Meng announced on Tuesday, Dec. 9. The office at 63-44 Austin St. serves more than 240 Queens residents each day. The office will shut down at noon tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 12, and remain closed while the project is underway; it could take between three and four months to complete, Meng noted. All individuals having business with Social Security— including walk-ins and appointments—will be handled beginning on Monday, Dec. 15, at the three closest Social Security offices in Jamaica (155- 10 Jamaica Ave., third floor, phone 1-866-592-0802); Flushing (138-50 Barclay Ave., phone 1-877-457-1735) and Bushwick (1111 Myrtle Ave., phone 1-888-327-1276). “Although this temporary closure will be an inconvenience, the work is necessary, and the renovations will allow the facility to better serve the needs of our borough,” said Meng. “It is important that Queens residents are aware of the temporary shutdown, and I will monitor and stay in contact with Social Security officials to make sure that the project stays on track.” Social Security offices are open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon. All 32 employees from the Rego Park facility will be temporarily relocated to one of the three other offices. The Rego Park office is a fullservice facility handling most Social Security matters including retirement, disability, survivors, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Social Security offices are operated by the U.S. Social Security Administration, an agency of the federal government that administers the nation’s Social Security program. ©Times Newsweekly - 2014 - VILLCASH MARK V.
