Members of the Harlem MagicMasters, a local entertainment basketball team, delighted parents, board members and children with a lively presentation about their organization. Curtis “Tiny” Johnson spoke about the different events Harlem MagicMasters can offers schools and communities. A Queens native, Johnson began his basketball career at St. John’s University where he played for the Red Storm. He has played for the ABA, CBA and has been with the MagicMasters for nearly a decade. At 7’5”-tall and sporting size 22 sneakers, Johnson joked about his nickname while delivering a fun yet informative message about his team’s purpose. “We do basketball events all around the country,” he explained. “We use entertainment and the vehicle of basketball to push campaigns of academics, sportsmanship and anti-bullying and teasing.” The Harlem MagicMasters offer a variety of events and programs to local schools, each geared toward the individual school’s needs and purposes. In addition to entertainment basketball shows and assemblies, the MagicMasters also conduct basketball clinics to teach students the basic fundamentals of the game. They also host -SEE CEC 24 ON PG. 28- Self-Serve Crook At Gas Station Swipes Cash During Middle Village Stickup by Robert Pozarycki A gun-toting crook helped himself to a Middle Village gas station’s cash during an armed robbery last Tuesday night, Nov. 25, police reported. Law enforcement sources said the heist took place at 9 p.m. inside the Citgo gas station located at 61-04 Fresh Pond Rd., at Eliot Avenue. Reportedly, the suspect— described as a black male standing 5’10”-tall, weighing 180 lbs. and wearing a black hat, blue jeans and a black shirt or sweatshirt—entered the office and confronted a station employee. Authorities said the crook displayed a black firearm and demanded cash. After taking $450 in currency, police noted, the bandit fled on foot in an unknown direction. Officers from the 104th Precinct responded to the scene. There were no injuries reported. Various police units canvassed the surrounding area for the suspect and evidence, but despite those efforts, no immediate arrests were made. The case was presented to the 104th Precinct Detective Squad for further investigation, police said. Anyone with information regarding the stickup or the suspect’s whereabouts that could prove helpful is asked to call the 104th Precinct Detective Squad at 1-718-386- 2735; all calls will be kept confidential. Students Act As City Council Members High schoolers from across New York City debated and voted on a mock legislative proposal during the 13th annual “Model New York City Council Project” held last month at the City Council chambers in Manhattan. Sponsored by the City University of New York (CUNY), the session focused on a measure concerning residential developments with separate entrances for low-income residents, or so-called “poor doors.” The measure passed 30-19, with two “Council members” absent. (photo: Yuan Yuan Kong, CUNY) Alleged R’wood Burglar Bagged Stolen Loot Dropped On Street by Robert Pozarycki Police reportedly caught up to a Ridgewood man who allegedly stole valuables from two units at a neighborhood apartment house during a pair of burglaries last Tuesday, Nov. 25. Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as 23-yearold Tyrell Jones of Myrtle Avenue. According to information provided by the Queens District Attorney’s office, Jones and an unidentified, unapprehended accomplice visited an apartment house on Fresh Pond Road off Catalpa Avenue between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. last Tuesday. Based on information obtained during its investigation, police determined the two suspects broke into adjacent apartments at the location, removing valuables from one dwelling and cash from another. The tenants reportedly returned home after the burglaries occurred and found the front doors damaged, an apparent sign of forced entry. At around 1:30 p.m. that afternoon, authorities said, an eyewitness observed Jones and his alleged cohort fleeing the scene. Twenty minutes later, police noted, another individual spotted Jones allegedly dropping a bag containing items in front of a home on 62nd Street, about two blocks south of where the burglaries occurred. Officers from the 104th Precinct who were alerted to the break-ins recovered the bag, which was found to contain a Macbook laptop computer, a Samsung tablet, an HP laptop computer and a PlayStation 3 video game console. A video game controller along with a glove and a screwdriver were also discovered, it was noted.
