4 DECEMBER 1, 2016 RIDGEWOOD TIMES WWW.QNS.COM Congress approves a new ZIP code for Glendale BY ANTHONY GIUDICE [email protected] @A_GIUDICEREPORT Glendale’s fi ght for its own ZIP code came to a head on Wednesday, Nov. 30, as the House of Representatives was set to vote on the bill put forth by Congresswoman Grace Meng. At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Meng announced the House passed the bill by a voice vote; it moves on to the Senate. Check QNS.com for further details. For three years, Meng has tried to get Glendale a ZIP code separate from Ridgewood’s 11385, which it has shared for more than 30 years. In her latest attempt, Meng urged that her bill (H.R. 657) be included in any postal-related legislation that the panel may pass by the end of 2016 — when the current session of Congress is set to end. In a letter dated Aug. 29 to Congressmen Jason Chaff etz and Elijah Cummings, the current respective chair and ranking member of the Committee of Oversight and Government Reform, Meng cites several reasons as to why Glendale should receive its own ZIP code. According to Meng, many Glendale residents complain about problems with receiving mail because many ARE YOU TIRED OF times mail is sent to the Ridgewood post offi ce fi rst, then makes its way to the Glendale post offi ce, delaying delivery to the residents of Glendale. “Despite having its own post offi ce, residents report slow mail service and problems with receiving mail,” Meng wrote in the letter. “Glendale is not always a recognized neighborhood within the ZIP code, as Ridgewood is the primary neighborhood listed. This results in mail that oft en gets sent fi rst to Ridgewood, delaying the mail or even causing it to be returned to sender.” Assemblyman Mike Miller who represents Glendale, is happy to see that there will be a vote on getting the neighborhood its own ZIP code to provide better mail service to his constituents. “Aft er a long deliberation regarding Glendale having its own ZIP code, I am glad to hear this new ZIP code will fi nally get a vote on the House fl oor. Glendale residents wait for time-sensitive packages too long,” Miller said. “Packages are transferred first to Flushing and then back to Ridgewood before being delivered to Glendale. As is my hope, Glendale receiving its own ZIP code would allow packages to be sent directly to the new Glendale ZIP code, cutting down the time to receive parcels and packages. I am thankful to Congresswoman Grace Meng for fi nally pushing this to the fl oor of the House of Representatives.” Service providers also have a diffi cult time fi nding homes in Glendale since the neighborhood does not come up on GPS devices, making it hard for them to fi nd the correct address. This is particularly important for emergency services that may need to get to an address in time to save someone’s life. “Service providers, such as providers of utilities and repairs, have trouble finding Glendale homes because Glendale is oft en not recognized as a neighborhood in the ZIP code,” Meng added. “Glendale does not show up on GPS devices, and this causes confusion about where addresses in this neighborhood are located.” File photo/QNS A vote on Congresswoman Grace Meng’s bill to get Glendale its own ZIP code happened on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
