The Christ the King (CK) girls soccer team finished its regular season with a dominating 5-0 win over their rival, The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA), to end the season at the top of their league. This is the fifth year in a row that CK has won the Brooklyn/ Queens regular season championship. During the game, CK’s captain, senior Sarah Nolan, was a force as she kept pressure on the TMLA defenders the entire game. Nolan scored both goals of the first half, assisted by senior Andrea Cardozo and junior Paulina Ambrus, sending CK into the break with a 2-0 lead. The second half was much of the same and showcased the emergence of a future star in freshman Karen Pineda, who was able to get by the TMLA defenders for three goals, earning her first hat trick with the team. Pineda was assisted by great midfield play from junior Cardozo, Ambrus and Kiana Leger. The CK defense, anchored by senior Diana Paravatos, junior Diana Aucapina, sophomore Juliana Lignowski and freshman Elizabeth Gordillo, was also able to shut down the TMLA offense throughout the game, and kept TMLA off the scoreboard. Next up for CK, they will play the winner from the Oct. 28 semifinals matchup between TMLA and Fontebonne Hall on Nov. 2. The winner of that game will advance to represent Brooklyn/Queens in the Catholic League New York State Semi-Finals.
